I am this close to buying the Sony kd 30xs955 but am a bit overwhelmed when I read these posts about all the tweaks, settings, codes, screen ratio, ect. Im a simple man with simple tastes. At this point I just have Dishnetwork, no HD upgrade as of yet. I will use this to mostly watch dvd movies & regular dish network stuff mostly hbo. Is it as hard as it sounds to set these sets up for pq at this point I feel like I will need to be a rocket scientist to get the set to have a good looking pq

One of the things necessary to understand your display and what it has to offer, is to read the owners manual.
If you have that covered, you can get the most from any display short of a measured ISF calibration.
Good Viewing,

I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist. I plugged my cheapo antenna into it, did the channel scan and had a beautiful picture without any real tweaking. Now, if you want the absolute best picture possible, you might have to play with the menus a little. But, if you are a "simple man" with "simple tastes" and are ok without the minute improvements that menu settings can provide, you probably won't have to change anything.
Buy it. You won't regret it. You might not even need the manual, but it is surprisingly well written. Plus, if you need help, you can post here, or just send me a private message. I'm not a 30xs955 super expert, but I think I understand all the standard menus. Sorry for sounding like a cheerleader for this TV, but my wife and I have had it for two weeks and we couldn't be happier. Heck I even watched 30 laps of NASCAR just b/c the picture was so great! :D
Don't be worried about the folks around here; they enjoy the technobabble and it's almost a hobby for them to set up the "perfect" A/V system. You can enjoy your TV without being a perfectionist.

I agree with the last poster. The picture on my 30xs955 was great without any tweaking. I ended up using the pro setting and turning the picture up a few notches since it was a little dark. It wasnt very complicated and the picture looks awesome.

Check out jandr.com or bhphotovideo.com if your willing to buy online. They're both great sites and they have the 30xs955 available for $699. Otherwise you may be able to find it at a local store for around the same price. If you're anywhere near wisconsin, I just saw an add for American Electronics (americantv.com). They have it for $699 too.
The xs955's have, imho, the best black levels money can buy. I compared the xbr series to the xs and they are virtually (if not exactly) the same. You are gonna love your new tv

...I compared the xbr series to the xs and they are virtually (if not exactly) the same... That's because the XBRs and XSs use the exact same picture tube. :)
