Can someone explain to me why only some locations are getting HD locals? What is the limiting factor that determines which locations can get HD?
I live in the Grand Rapids, MI area. Is this area years away or could it happen is 2007 or sooner?
I have a 942 receiver. Should I be able to receive ESPN2 and the other new channels or will I have to upgrade?

ESPN 2 and all new HD locals are in mpeg 4, the 942 will not see them. Many of the channels started showing up late yesterday afternoon. As near as I can tell NY and LA HD locals started overnight.

All new HD channels are mpeg4, so without new Vip's, you will see nothing. Only heard NY and LA have been activated. Boston, Chicago and Nashville are uplink, but not activated yet, and Albuquerque showing as "Test Channels".

Not true about what you said about LA Local HD channels being activated already. They are NOT. I LIVE IN LA..and Dish Network told me today and last night that my Local HD channels will NOT be activated until Tomorrow February 2nd.

NYC HD locals are now on the air. MPEG-4 people can find them as follows:
WABC-DT 6300
WCBS-DT 6301 & 9482
WNBC-DT 6302
WNYW-DT (Fox) 6303

I just spoke with Dish technical support and she told me that the HD Locals aren't suppose to launch until tomorrow February 2nd.And I pointed out to her that New York is already getting their locals in HD.She said for some reason people all over the country are sparatically getting some local HD channels..she said the channels could be just testing in the area of some customers to see if the local HD channels work..but the formal launch is suppose to be February 2nd.
I noticed when I had Cable and satelite together and had all my locals in HD..the clarity was sharper on Adelphia cables HD Locals.. at the time I only had CBS HD through DN to compare it to..cable looked better. Here's hopeing the new HD locals with DN will look just as good or better than cable's Local HD channels.
We'll see won't we?

Sorry about the misunderstanding. I saw some posts from people in LA and NY, plus some Dish reps told me they were on. One said that the computers were messed up today and there were many customers whose HD were actually turned back off.

ok, now it's killing me..how do the locals look in HD??? don't keep it to yourselves..my 211 is on the way..the 12:02 BS dish said didn't happen..it was more like 11:00 today before the order could be completed..and 49.00 later my 211 is on the way..hope i'll have the major networks up by the Daytona 500!!

I JUST OFF WITH TECH SUPPORT I ORDERED HD GOLD TONIGHT I LOST CHANNELS AND ENDED UP WITH SILVER
HE FIXED PROBLEM
I ASKED HIM ABOUT LOCALS(IM IN THE BOSTON MARKET)
HE SAID THE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE TURNING THEM ON THROUGHOUT TODAY
BUT ONLY SEES 2 WERE
HE SPENT 10 MIN LOOKING UP INFO ON HD LOCALS
HIS MEMO SAID THE AREAS PICKED WOULD BE ON TODAY
(HE LAUGHED) AND SAID WELL TODAYS ALMOST OVER SO WE CAN FORGET THAT..
I GUESS WE ALL JUST HAVE TO WAIT:-)
