Well, it's the same old rant as before i.e. inadequately trained staff at the major electronic stores in the Vancouver area.
I visited a local drugstore chain that has an extensive audio-visual department a few weeks ago and noticed that they sold Sharp hdtvs along with several other popular brands. I asked the sales rep if they would be getting the Sharp Aquos 44" 1080p model soon. He replied somewhat sarcastically "Naw, nobody transmitts 1080p anyhow!" I replied that I knew that and this particular set plus a few other brands de-interlaces and/or upconverts the signal to 1080 progressive. He then made a derisive facial expression and departed.
Two weeks ago, my wife and I visited a large furniture chain that was promoting a sale on a particular Sony hdtv set that included a free $700 stand. We are constantly bombarded with large glossy adds from this store several times a week on tv and in all the newspapers so we thought we would check it out. As soon as we walked into the store a salesman, armed with a clipboard, started following us around this giant warehouse that was bigger than a football field. Finally, he made his move and thrust a very crappy Xerox copy of their "Specials" into my hand. I just couldn't shake this guy. He was relentless! So I asked him a few questions about some of the sets they had on display and all he did was read aloud what little information was on the price ticket. At one point, I asked what resolution did certain sets display and he didn't have a clue!
Then last week-end I walked into a major electronic chain store to hopefully view some hdtv sports. They had easily 50 or more hdtvs all showing " Shrek" on DVD. They also had several mini home theaters showing "Finding Nemo" also on DVD. I asked one of the young salesman why were they not showing the football game that was being broadcast in High Def. All I got was a shrug!
The thing that really p---- me off is: All these companies invite you to come and view "breathtaking video like you've never experienced before" but they rarely have hdtv displayed on ther sets! Also the appaling lack of knowledge that some of these salesman have about the very expensive item they are trying to sell me. I've obtained most of my hdtv info from the Internet, Sound & Vision magazine, and forums like this. (Certainly not from some of the sales reps I have come across in the last five years!)
