Free receiver upgrade.

Got a call from Directv wednesday.
The young lady says (I see that you have 3 receivers , but only 2 of them are HD dvr's. Being as you are such a good, long time customer we would like to upgrade the other receiver. When would be a good time for us to send an installer to your house to do this? Needles to say I was kind of shocked by the call.
Anyway I kind of laughed and started asking questions. The first thing I asked was how much is the going to cost? She said , nothing at all it's free. And your bill will not go up.
Then I asked why I had to have someone install it. I'm quite capable of doing it myself. And she said it had something to do with a telephone line to it. And I told her I didn't have telephone hooked up to any of my receiver's because I don't watch ppv movies.
My final question was, what is the catch, are you going to extend my contract for another 2 yrs? And her reply was that that didn't seem like and issue under the circumstances. So I said. I guess not being as I've been with directv for 11 or 12 yrs already and had no plans to leave.
Anyway what it all boils down to is I don't really need the new receiver, It's just for a 15" tv in the kitchen, but I'm not going to turn it down. So I'll probably just swap it out with one of the other dvr's in the bedroom or living room. Don't want to pass up something for nothing.

I've been with them about as long as you have and have never received a phone call. That has to be a 3rd party company that sells Directv and equipment. Don't trust them because Directv doesn't call people with sales pitches. You may well be able to get a free unit by calling them yourself if you want one.

I had to make a call to DirecTV but here's how I got a free HD/DVR receiver. I had replaced an old TV with a new HDTV. The old one was hooked up to a SD/DVR receiver since the old TV wasn't HDTV. I called DirecTV about getting a new receiver for the new HDTV and was told that they would be glad to trade them out at no cost to me.

All I had to do was to return the old receiver to them within 30 days and DirecTV even paid for the return shipping. And yes, it would obligate me for another 24 months but where I live it's either satellite TV or no TV at all. I've been with DirecTV since the mid '90s and have no reason to switch so another 24 months is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

No complaints here.

When they give you free stuff they usually extend your contract for 2 years whether you've been a customer for 2 years or 20 years. Like someone else said it's probably not DIRECTV calling. It could be some install company that will do the work and you'll end up with a 2 year contract extension.

That sounds about right. Been with since '96 never ever had them call me.

I had called them. I wanted to add a second DVR. They wanted to charge me $199 but then they said only $99. That sounded good. Then billing said extend my contract 24 months. I told them, "One or the other." Retention waived the $99 and extended my contract. I kept both the H24s that I had. I like my new setup. No more recording conflicts.

Like most have said as long time customers, it doesn't matter to us whether there is a 2 year extension, we were going to be with them in two years anyway.
