Considering Going From Dish To Direct

Iím currently a Dish Network customer but Iím considering moving to DirecTV but Iím concerned about the equipment. I have a VIP612 HD DVR that I can record two Dish channels and one OTA channel and still view a recorded program.

Does DirecTV have HD DVRs like my VIP612? What is the model called? I welcome pro and con comments so I can make a smart decision whether to make the change. My motive for the move is the two year starter package offered by Direct.
:what:

Directv has the HR24 which is almost the same as the 612, but no OTA tuner, you can buy an AM21 for OTA but it will use one of the 2 tuners in the 24, unlike the 612 that has its own third tuner for OTA

The 24 comes free with new account

If you go with a HR34 for $99 you get 5 tuners to record from, one of which could be an AM21 for OTA then you would still have 4 to record sat channels with.

The am21 usually runs $75

oh, the 24 can stream dvr to one other tv, the hr34 can stream dvr service to 3 other tvs, 34 is perfect for 4 rooms to watch all dvr recordings all at the same time.

I live alone and have just one TV so my needs aren't great. Thanks for the info tho.

We too are Dish Network customers, out of our 2 year contract. I have been looking into upgrading to the new Hopper/Joey system as our receivers are old(as are the tv's. not hi-def and would have to be replaced) and probably need to be replaced. Dish is not working with us on pricing, they only give breaks to new customers. I started looking into Direct TV and am even more confused by their pricing. To further complicate matters, we still use vcr's to record on and if we went hi-def, the vcr's may not record well.
So far the first year starter package from Direct looks good, the second year not so much.

Hi Nancy,

I saw a savings the first year and costlier the second year. I would be a little ahead overall but because of the equipment I'm staying with Dish. I have the VIP612 that records two satellite channels and one OTA channel and I can still watch something I've already recorded at the same time. DirecTV doesn't offer a comparable receiver so that was the deal breaker of going over.

I did talk to someone in Customer Loyalty and received a $10.00 a month reduction for six months. In six months I'll go back and try for more.

Good luck.:)
