I have an older (5 yrs maybe) Sony projector that was given to me. I have noticed a slight darkish area on the screen with a slightly brighter kind of halo around it. Then I recently also noticed a very slight flickering, where the brightnes changes slightly for a second.
Does this sound like it just needs a new bulb or does it sound like a problem with some other component?

What's your Sony model? Do you know how many hours tallied on the lamp? Exactly where is this dark/halo area on the screen...towards one of the corners or near center?
Too many unknowns to know for sure what the cause might be.

It is the vpl-hs51. I am not sure how many hours on the lamp but my father in law gave it to me and said it is probably due to be replaced. I have ordered a replacement lamp but don't have it yet. The halo or bright spot is along the right side with a bulb in the bottom right center - sort of a musical note shape. It started as a small spot on the upper right and has been getting bigger in the last week or so. It is also getting more noticeable. The flickering also started a few days ago. The flickering is subtle. All the electrical is new in the room so I don't think it is an electrical issue - also it was working fine before with no problems on the other components. No noises from the fan either. Thanks for your input.

A failing lamp can flicker and will be dim. The other thing you are seeing has nothing to do with the lamp. Could be dust or more likely a major failure starting.. Good luck

If it is dust blogs how do I clean it? Do I just blow it out with compressed air when I replace the lamp?
I'm not totally sure it's gotten worse from when I first noticed it- I may just be more tuned in to it now.
if its not dust do you think I'm better off just getting a new projector? Is the technology much improved from my unit?

No compressed air, you will probably make it worse if it is dust. Normally you disassemble them to clean them. Yes, the current under $2000 projectors will blow it's doors off.

The halo/hazy area is most visible when the picture has a lot of blue in it. When it's a pure black screen there's nothing at all. Does this sound like its something wrong with the blue LCD?
Sounds like I need to start looking into projectors. Can you make some recommendations? Definitely in the less than $2k region.
