Help with Comcast Basic Service

I have Comcast for internet and I split the service so that I can watch my basketball team. I have Directv so they do not carry my RSN. They also black out the games on the NBA league pass so this option is really my only choice.

I did this with success last year but this year I cannot tune in the majority of channels that I could before. I'm just running off a splitter right to my TV with a QAM tuner.

What could be the issue? I tried programming multiple times and still only get like 25 channels and none in HD.

Are you paying for TV service? When I had cable internet only they installed a filter that cut off most all of the channels.

The remaining channels have been encrypted and require equipment. Also, depending on your market, they are soon making ALL channels 100% digital, so that no local channels with even be available without equipment.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I only have internet service. So my only option is to sign up for the TV service and rent their digital converter?

Depending on your market, yes. You MAY still have the option of limited basic cable without a converter, but those days are very limited.

Can I just get a set top box with a cablecard or do I still need to sign up for the basic package?

The box with the cable card will come with a basic package.

If you are asking if you can "buy" a box and card, NO. Almost every cable box manufacturer refuses to sell the boxes to the public, so if you find one for sale, it is stolen.

You can buy the set top box or cable tuner for your PC and then get a cable card from your provider in most places. Here in Houston the first cable card is free and additional cable cards are $9 to $10 per month. But you still have to subscribe at least to the basic digital service.
