Rage for PC

Someone fill me in - WTF happened with this game?

So, I know AMD hardware had issues with the texture popping. As far as I can see it still does (and GTX 460 SC does too, get texture corruption running 8K config and pop-up garbage running 4K config, Transcoding on.)

I've been experimenting trying to get this game feeling - smooth. The Vertical synch on this game is atrocious. I mean, either I get traditional tearing, vertical tearing, or frame capping. I've yet to try override but I kept reading any kind of overriding plays bad with this game.

I'm running a Config file I found off the internets where everything was marked Very High. If this is "very higH" this game looks like utter garbage.

Low rez textures almost fucking every where. Is there a texture patch I'm suppose to download? What's a good config file? Here is what I'm using (again found a generator online)

echo Do Not Argue - no arguments needed
echo RAGE - cfg version: 1.3
echo * TEST - Added forced option to try and fix the black squares/missing textures
echo * added - Several Player Movement options (run / walk / crouch)
echo * added - Option to turn off all AimAssist - "g_AimAssist_Disable_All"
echo * added - Vsync Mode / wglSwapInterval - "r_swapInterval"
echo * added - Option to turn off blood, splats, sprays and gibs effects - "g_bloodEffects"
echo * added - Gibs option - "g_reactivateGibsForMover"
echo * added - Field of View option - "g_fov"
echo * deleted - Size (in kb) of the temporary streaming buffers - "s_streamBufferSizeK" - can only be set in the launch options
echo * deleted - Use compressed sound files (mp3/xma) forced to 1 - "s_useCompression" - uncompressed sounds will not work

echo RAGE - cfg version: 1.2
echo * added - Forced VMTR reload as standart/non changeable value
echo * added - Sound Settings options
echo * fixed - Virtual Texture No Preload default to 0 instead of 1 "vt_nopreload"

echo Do Not Argue - no arguments needed
echo RAGE - cfg version: 1.1
echo * added - descriptions to the options hover over them to get some info on the settings
echo * added - several default added cvars to ensure the engine uses all its functions
echo * added - number of anti-aliasing samples (0= no multi-sampled FBO) r_multiSamples
echo * added - compression method for generated pages "mt_genCompression"
echo * fixed - force everything to high quality setting "image_useCompression"

echo RAGE - cfg version: 1.0

Rail- I have a gtx 460 oc and had horrible time getting this game to run - had to force vsynch in control panel and iirc edited a config file but finally got it to run 'pretty good with mild screen tearing which was 1000% better than the texture pop-in. Also this game is waaaaaaay too short - I felt like I was just getting started and it was over - too bad really cause when it runs smooth it looks awesome. Another game with enormous potential squandered but I haven't given up hope because I think the new engine has a lot of promise. If I hadn't played borderlands than I would have thought this game A++ but borderlands has it beat hands down in every category except eye candy (if you can get it to run right.)

Borderlands to me looked better than this game. At least in Borderlands the low rez textures were part of the art style. Here you have great environments, then low textured garbage mixed in with some decent stuff, and all blended together with an engine that seems to love tearing. (Smart Synch - WTF is that!?)

I thought running it on the GTX 460 with Transcoding on would be better, but it ran into other issues. I've tried everything, but I'll try overriding v-synch this time. The in-game vsynch is godawful.

The only way to make this game beautiful up close is a nearly 1 TB file size. It's essentially one big texture. The only thing wrong with the textures is the insane amount of compression it took to get the game down to a mortal size (at one point the build exceed 3 TB, but that was pure, raw uncompressed hand drawn textures.

If id offered a 1TB torrent of the megatexture with far less compression, I would download it and use it. There's no other way around it though. You'd have to nearly double the file size to even incrementally upgrade the textures. But this is Carmack's console game. Always had been. The central design pillar was 60fps 1280x720 parity on 360 and PS3. He knocked that aspect out of the ballpark at the expense of the PC version.

I still thoroughly enjoyed the game and found the game looked great once I actually started playing and stopped scrutinizing the engine. Best single player shooting mechanics by a long mile. No "X" hitmarkers needed here. Just pure fluid animation and a definite reaction to every bullet that connects (and even near misses and grazes!).

If you can get past the console concessions, it a wonderfully refreshing game.

Sigh...

Guess I'll stomach the textures for now. At least the pop-up is almost gone, harder to see unless I look for it.

The tearing is just too much. I've tried:
d3d overrider (won't help since its OpenGL, but why not)
driver level (did nothing)
Smart Vsynch creates a clip/frame drop that is more noticeable than the tearing (not sure if AMD hardware even supports this from what I've read.)
In-game on my FPS meter reads 60FPS, but it feels so laggy.

And anything I can do about the mouse feeling so floaty in the menus?

This game feels like a technical PoS.

v sync works for me. Try the 460. It's got enough beef to run the 8k config at an unflinching 60fps.

Mouse is F'd in the menus.

You could try the 16k config with your 2 GB 5780. Probably one of the only games that will use most of the vRAM on it.

Yeah, I remember reading all the technical mumbo-jumbo of how this game is a "smart-engine" that scales to your hardware and yada yada yada. "You'll always get 60FPS no matter what" or something like that.

It's just that the texture quality is so low. So godawfully low. I'd have taken at least half the TB haha.

I get what you mean. Playing it does have that nostalgic feeling of days long gone. It's a solid FPS from what I've played. I enjoy that the AI doesn't just run into my barrel and I actually have to react haha.

There are 3 v-synch options.
Off - Horizontal Tearing
Smart - Vertical tearing
On - 60FPS, no tearing, but game feels laggy at times, even if the my meter reads 60FPS - it feels like it's dropping to 40FPS.

I tried the GTX 460, using the 8K config I get texture corruption in some spots. The GTX 460 is on a tri-core Phenom II X720 (4th core off, she felt it hurt more than it helped.) Not sure how CPU dependant this game is, but the GTX 460 SC couldn't run the 8k config to my liking.

Maybe I'll try the 16K option, but everything I've read claimed there is barely any difference. I'll try it.

John Goodman is Dan Hagar - sweet!

Welps, set the config file for 16k, pretty much obliterated the texture pop-in issue. But then my FPS started to sink to the 40-50s.

I run my card stock, and it's only showing what, 40-50% load. Guess I'll juice it, least the RAM, see if it does any good.

Stock: 850 Core/1200 Memory - gonna go 900 core/ 1300 memory.

That 16k config is ridiculous. I want to know what Carmack developed this motherfucker on. Every game journo who saw it before it was compressed to hell, early previews etc. all say the same thing - it was awesome. Art designers at id expressed sorrow at the finished product.

Oh well. I hope we get the real megatexture one day. Then entire game is hand painted.

As is, the texture have what literally looks like .jpg compression in some places. That's gotta hurting considering at one time in development it was completely high res.

I just wish they'd release the uncompressed textures for the people who want them. On torrents if they don't want to host all of it. But then they'd probably have to warranty it, etc. etc. I wish Valve bought id instead of ZeniMax. :/

I'll tell you something awesome about Rage though;

after a good 1-2 Rage session, if you go directly to another game, you can see tiling all over the fucking place.

id is just ahead of their time with this one. Even if it was PC exclusive, the file size for good textures would be massive. 100 GB+ minimum if smart guys at B3D are to be believed.

It's a next gen engine even in the PC sense. Well, maybe not if the flooding didn't happen. :p

Tiling and repeating textures have always been easy for me to see. Why I like the Tessellation feature of Batman: AC.

They should have offered the PC crowd something. These resolutions are beyond acceptable from the legendary id.

Engine scaling aside, this isn't want we expect from them - but as we all know, they are now console focused. Hopefully the next gen consoles can bring life back to textures. We need it.

Once you slog through all the set-up the game mechanics are f'ig impressive - every gun just feels right and each different ammo type performs differently. The fluidity of a bandit loping at you is really amazing then you hit it with a shot and the impact spins it like you would realistically expect- awesome. Once I had it running I was real happy until all of a sudden the game ended and I was like WTF? I was just getting started. Never bothered with the mp. And IIRC never saw the sewers so maybe that is worth a re-visit someday. But I still have BF3, Metro, The Last Remnant, Portal2, Batman AA, Dark Souls, Forza 4 in various stages of completion (plus a few others I have probably forgotten) - Steam is both a blessing and a curse.

Despite the fact that i'm probably getting a new GPU when the ATI 7000 series comes out(no nVidia since they will be delayed till Q2 or 3), I bought RAGE for the X360 as i'm not putting up with all this crap you guys have tolerated. I play games, not fix them and the X360 version is supposed to be one helluva optimized game.

Soooo....

decided to load up Rage and now I'm getting this odd hitching that I didn't have the first time around. Jesus, this game is so freaking weird.

I didn't change anything from my settings. NOTHING.

GPU never goes beyond 50% load either. WTF mate?

There is also a crackling sound now. Man this game ran perfect day 1, never got it to run as smooth again haha.

Just had a good session of Rage. Texture Loads seem to only happen once in a new area with the 8k setting. Gonna keep it at that. 16k was hitting some wall (latency, GPU power, not sure).

It could have just been the area. Went from peak of 1888MBs with 16k setting to about 1066MBs with 8K profile.

So 8k profile is definitely doable on the GTX 460 SC. Wonder what was causing the corruption?

Now that the tech kinks are worked out what do you think of the game itself. As stated to me the AI IMO was much better than usual and the fluidity of the motion was top-notch.

So far I'm torn. I'm enjoying the game, but maybe it's because I'm still early in the game.

Pros:
Great visuals after ignoring certain textures.
Controls feel tight/responsive
Weapon selection is classic haha.

Cons:
too many mini-games - I think I only killed people for an hour of the 2-3 hours I played last night (did more racing and gambling haha.)

The game is decent. The lack of a solid constructed story really bugs me. Like my dude doesn't question the surroundings, just "aight - I'll kill mad people, no questions asked." Haha.

Yea - plot is weak (I didn't see the Card mini games till I was almost done - wondered what the cards were for and the battle game is stupid). If the breadth and story along with 'vastness' of the borderlands arsenal could be combined with the visuals, fluidity and AI of Rage that would be something.

Need to finish it before the GF kills me haha.

Soooooo...it wasn't the options. Either my hardware can't handle it anymore (Radeon HD 5870 is getting oooolllldddd) or something is causing me issues.

Got a mission to head back to the Wasted Garage, using the 8K option - still get that hitch/crackle sound/FPS dips.

I did other missions such as revisiting the starting area, ran around Wellsprings, did a few driving missions, and no issues.

Get back into Wasted Garage and performance dips, sound clipping - oh my.

Got my Radeon juiced to 915/1310 stock volts. Anything over that and I get artifacting on the desktop. Temps stay in the 50s, since this game doesn't push my GPU load beyond 60% which baffles me. If my GPU got more room to spare, why am I not maxing it out...

Oh yeah, what was it? *cough* AMD *cough* hahaha.

4 crashes, 10+ reboots, and a handful of websites with absolutely no information and I'm done.

Config file:
seta com_allowconsole "1"

vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 16384
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 16384
vt_pageimagesizeunique 16384
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
vt_restart
vt_maxaniso 4
image_anisotropy 4

How I came to this? Well, setting all the values to 16384 introduced a popping in audio and hitching. Not sure what it was, couldn't figure it out. So, I clear my Config file just leaving the console, go through the ingame options and set it to 8K. I check via the console the options and noticed it set the first three to 8192 (8kb) and the fourth option to half 4096 (4kb). So, I give it a try with the 16K numbers and PRESTO!

99.9% of Pop-up gone, no sound popping, no hitching, just smooth gameplay and acceptable textures.

Really am enjoying the gun mechanics. Reminds me of classic Doom. Has brought me back to my corridor roots (swarm of mobs, run back, set up and pop them as they enter the room.)

Probably a good suggestion. Most of the mobs I can pick off with my handgun + monocular.

I love the sound of the Shotgun. It feels good shooting haha.
