Not good news from sony (http://news.yahoo.com/sony-headed-fourth-straight-red-064646944.html;_ylt=Akx576pyUTGS09fY9aI8BIwjtBAF;_ ylu=X3oDMTNxZDMycmxrBG1pdANKdW1ib3Ryb24gVGVjaFNGBH BrZwNjYzk3OGY4Ny1jNjlmLTMyMDQtOTE0OS1jZDMyNmJkNzM5 ZWEEcG9zAzMEc2VjA2p1bWJvdHJvbgR2ZXIDOWJkYzI5NzAtMD UzOC0xMWUxLTk1ZmUtNjIwNWQ5NzM0Nzg4;_ylg=X3oDMTFpcT ZobnQ4BGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDBHBzdGNh dAN0ZWNoBHB0A3NlY3Rpb25z;_ylv=3):

Sony reported a 27 billion yen ($346 million) loss for the latest quarter and downgraded its annual earnings forecast Wednesday to stay in the red for the fourth year straight, battered by the strong yen and poor sales of flat panel TVs.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate is now projecting a 90 billion yen loss ($1.2 billion) for the fiscal year through March 2012 after earlier forecasting a profit of 60 billion yen ($769 million).

Regarding the game division:
The future of Sony's PlayStation game business is also unclear.

Its much hyped latest portable Vita is set to go on sale in Japan later this year, where it faces off against Japanese rival Nintendo Co.'s 3DS, which features 3-D gaming without glasses. But Vita won't be ready for the year-end holidays overseas.

I didnt think Sony has been in the red overall the last 4 years, I knew their HDTV divsion has lost the last 8 years but aside from that I was not aware that they have been in the red for 4 consecutive years.. That article does not touch on that part (well I skimmed sooo..) all it touched on was this last quarter and the fiscal year downgrade.

OH MY GOSH!!!!!! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD FOR PLAYSTATION!!!!!!!! NAKED BABIES ARE CRYING FOR THEIR MOTHERS!!!!!!! JAPANESE BUSINESSMEN ARE JUMPING FROM SKYSCRAPERS!!!! CARS ARE DRIVING INTO THE OCEAN!!!!!!!!! A NEWS REPORT IS STATING THAT THE PSVITA IS GOING TO FACE COMPETITION!!!!!

Wait a minute....

So you're making claims in one thread that playstation is on life support based on this? The PS Vita is expected to face competition? That's the nail in the coffin that leads you to "life support?" Overexaggerate much?

Wait a minute, the last financial report this summer for the previous fiscal year showed an operating profit of $434 million from the Networked Products & Services Division... That's the PS3 (and all their other iterations and PC's). So why exactly is playstation on life support when it was one of only 2 profitable divisions at Sony? I think you may have the term "life support" confused.

Sony's earnings/losses in the first half of 2010 vs. 2011 in each division (http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/viewer/11q2/). Pictures, music, and financial services are profitable. However the rest (games, televisions, PCs, etc.) are not.

Great with this guy back we can relax on the PC mumbo-jumbo and argue about who's preferred console is winning some race that matters nothing to any of us.

Glad you're back!

Pretty tough to say if the gaming division itself is profitable... it's lumped in with TV's, phones... pretty much all of Sony's CE's.

(and I never said it was the most profitable in 2011... just selling more)

Does that chart include the Sony payout to Ericsson to get out of the phone industry?

Standard & Poor's has placed Sony on negative credit watch (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/38409/Sony_Put_On_Negative_Credit_Watch_Following_Projec ted_Losses.php) following news of its fourth consecutive year of losses, as well as projections for a fifth upcoming annual loss.

S&P has now placed its 'A-' long-term corporate credit and senior unsecured debt ratings on Sony on watch with negative implications, according to the Business Recorder.

"We need to review the prospects for Sony's operating and financial performance," it said in a statement.

"Sony's financial burden is likely to increase in tandem with the company's making Sony Ericsson a wholly owned subsidiary."

News is still news whether you like hearing it or not. The fact is that Sony does have some issues as it is clear that they are not who they used to be.
