Just got my dish setup today. Not impressed with PQ at all. Its just as bad as COX analog. A lot of the chanels look blurry because high compression. The HD channels look all right but they still have a lot of pixel blocks. I'm getting over 100 for Singal Strength. The dish guy said everything was normal. I'm just hoping MPEG4 is rolled out soon.

I have the 811 receiver

Hitachi 51" 51F710S

I read a few posts here stating the 811 had bad quality.

The real problem is the 811 was really only designed for tv's up to 42". That is why your HD looks better and your SD sucks. Try switching your tv to a 4:3 format on the sd channels and see if they look better.

My 811 and 50" Sony have great picture quality.

Maybe your H just needs some fine tuning??

I compared the HD to the analog cable, its quality is like 10 to 7. I'm kind of dissapointed at HD. I've have 811 and a 50' Sony LCD. I don't know if I have good cable or my TV is not good enough for HD or the 811 has problem. You may try to adjust the picture on your TV to see if it improves.

I have an 811 and a Mitsubishi 65 HD monitor; my SD leaves much to be desired; most channels are blurry; the picture quality improves slightly when I watch in 4:3 format but, then you have the issue of burning. When I play a DVD the PQ is far better than PQ in SD from dishnet. HD is fine.

Your 811 STB must be connected to your 51F710S by HDMI/DVI or HD Component cables. Your TV must have that input selected for viewing. The STB should be setup to output HD formats as 1080i. Your SD formats should be output as 480i so you can stretch.

I complained to to DISH so much there going to bring out a tech. But I'm pretty sure its just my TV. I did attach an S-Video cable and switched it to 4:3. the standard picture looks better but still its not great quality. any who wants to watch 4:3 risk of burnout! I also read about a lot of people having bad SD quality with 811 and Hitachi HDTV setups, so perhaps its just the way Hitachi produces its singals. But anyways Im stuck with DISH for a year so any other suggestions to improve PQ are welcome.

Don't expect mpeg4 to solve problems with resolution. However mpeg4 may reduce digital artifacts during high motion scenes.
The picture quality is determined by the quality of the original program, then the conversion processes it undergoes and finally the ammount of compression. And of course the hardware (monitors and receivers) may have some limitations as well.

RCA 50" DLP, PQ is excellent, using DVI for TV and quality component cables for DVD. and Audio connections. I would check connections and make sure you use the best hook up that the set will accommodate....
