Hi all,

Looking to upgrade from my 32" toshiba LCD to something bigger and nicer. I've read the threads for noobs, and still want some custom advice if anyone's feeling helpful. Here's my info:

1) Room characteristics: I'll be sitting about 7-9 feet away from the tv, so I've decided a 46-47" is the size I want. Most of my watching will be after sunset, but the room gets a lot of sunlight during the day that can't really be avoided.

2) Budget: I'm looking to spend less than $2000 for the tv.

3) Other concerns: I want good a picture and I don't want to pay for cuteness over quality, but I do love those new thin LED-LCDs.

I know everyone here loves plasma, but my instinct is to go with led-backlit lcd due to the brightness of my room and because i don't even want to think about burn in, transport hassles, etc.

I've been looking at the LG lh90, which got great reviews on cnet. Their new set, the sl90, is also led backlit, but is thin and pretty. Is the sl90 as good as the lh90? Am I on the wrong track?

Thanks!

Oh, and I will be using the set for a pretty even mix of cable tv, blu-ray and dvd movies, and xbox 360 gaming.

viewing angle is not a huge deal to me.

I would not buy another LG again myself. Here is why:

I went through 5 LG DLPs trying to find one that had a proper picture and didn't serious issues with shadows that didn't look like an x-ray. The first one just died after running it for only 8 hours and each other one I tried had the same issues with shadows and that x-ray look but to varying degrees on the same exact model so I would say that shows poor quality control. I finally gave up and got something else after 4 visits from a LG tech on them and lots of wasted time from work. They also would momentarily shut off the picture when a bright scene flashed on the screen.

My very close friend and neighbor bought the same model and returned his as well and bought over 3 years 3 different LG plasmas and they all had issues as well. Just having the TV's own menu on the screen for under 1 minute would cause Image retention that could be seen when watching something else. Then when he tried to use the DVI input on the first LG plasma it would not work even though it said it was HDCP compliant. The LG tech made several trips to try to get it to work and he wasted vacation time off from work to try to resolve it. They finally allowed him to return it after numerous letters and calls and the next LG plasma had pixels go bad in the first 9 months and those pixels would blink bright red, and then a couple of more started doing it so after a series of tech visits (more lost vacation time) they replaced his plasma again and the same thing happened with pixels going bad and just just going black/dead but blinking again. He finally sold his $3,500.00 50" LG plasma and got a Panasonic 50" plasma and is still happy after over 1.5 years.

Every single LG plasma spanning 2 model years had major Image retention and all also had problems with certain black areas on content have a purplish look to them despite it being black on my non-LG DLP.

So you can see what CAN happen when you choose to save a few bucks upfront and what it could end up costing you in the long run. ;)

You want to STAY AWAY from LED/LCD right now!! They are fairly new and WAY OVERPRICED!! Check out the Toshiba Regzas!! You can go with the 52XV645 for around 1200 at BB or go and check out the Panny Plasmas like the G15. LG run run away they have one of the WORST reliablity issues on the market!! Going form Toshiba to LG would be a step backward!!

i would recommend a 50"-54" tv from your viewing distance. you could even get a 58" and it would be fine.

i prefer plasma, but if you want an lcd, look into toshiba's as they seem to be the best sets for 2009
