HD Locals with Dish and other questions?

I am considering making the switch to Dish from Directv. I am mainly interested in getting the HD channels. Is the only way to get local channels from OTA antenna? I saw on DirecTV's website they offer an OTA Antena installation with their package, does anyone know if Dish does this as well? I could not find it on their website. Also, am I able to control the Dish Receiver with my stand alone Tivo? I heard that Tivo won’t recognise the broadcast and give me the titles and descriptions.

Any imput is apprecaited.

You will need an OTA antenna if you want to receive digital (HD) locals however dish does offer SD (based on your analog) locals for many cities. The dish installation does not normally include an OTA antenna so expect to pay extra for that install.

If you purchase the 942 then you can record HD for both satellite and local channels. If you purchase the 811 I imagine you could use one of the SD video outputs to your TIVO, VCR or DVD recorder for saving programs. You will not be able to record in HD though.

In order to get guide info you'll have to subscribe to locals although you might be able to get info without subscribing with the 811. Sorry, can comment on how guide data might be passed to TIVO.

To get the former VOOM channels, you'll need an additional dish pointed at the old VOOM satellite...

Does Dish even offer a OTA Antenna? Will they install it for an additional charge if I buy it?

I don't believe that dish does anymore. But if you have the antenna most likely the installers would mount and run the coax for an additional charge. You're responsible for determining what antenna you need. Example how far from the transmitters, do you need VHF or UHF or both, do you need a preamp and where you want the mast mounted?

I have a pre-amp and a Wineguard Square Shooter, I got from Voom, the installer told me together it was worth $179.00, I'll sell it cheap because I am still to far out from locals to get anything other than PBS HD, via OTA, anyone interested, let me know

Generally the furthest for UHF is about 60 miles. Also the digital stations in your area might be at low power so see if that's the case with you. There still may be hope.

The case with me is I am in a rural mountainous area, and the stations are about 50 or more miles away, at a much lower elevation than where I live, so until DISH gets HD locals, I have none, but its cool, I'd just like to get a few bucks out of the squareshooter
