Recording/Playback HD TV/MOVIES

I'm intrested in recording and playing back HD TV and Movies(TV) to and from my computer. I want to keep the HD quality so s-video cables won't do. Is there some sort of guide on-line that explains the whole process?

I have a few questions regarding this process too.

DVI is uncompressed, so would I be able to record to PC anyways or will it be too much data/resources for my PC? Are component cables uncompressed data too? If it isn't, is there some kind of component cable adapter for PC or a PC card that has component cable input?

I have a samsung widescreen TV that does 480p/720p/1080i. As you can tell I basically want to turn my computer into a HTPC/PVR.

you can get something like geforce 6600 card that has component output dongle in addition to its 2 DVI ports

There is a few ways to capture hd video....

Capture Card:You can only get local channels and depending if the card has a qam tuner you can capture un-encrypted hd channels.

D-Vhs Player: Stream the media from the player to your pc using firewire. (Probably most popular way)

Cable box: Im not sure but i read somewhere you can stream the video to your pc. Only with certain boxes.

To playback recorded hd media to your tv i suggest using zoom player professional. Then you will need powerstrip and a video card with dvi or component output.

So how does this dongle work, I hook up component cables to the dongle, and the dongle hooks up to the s-video of the card? That'll really captures HD 1080, not s-video?

I read an article on htpcnews (http://htpcnews.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9263) and it doesn't mention you can't capture 1080 using dongle, but it does say you're limited to 480 unless you use one of two software to bypass css.

I have a 6800 card with the same outputs, I probably only need a dongle to test it out, unless the first version of the 6x00 cards have a problem with video capture.

Am I going about this all wrong? Should I have an HD capture card for my TV so I hook up an antenna into it, then record, then output it through my video card DVI to TV?

Thats exactly what you need to do....Your video card cannot capture hd video.

No, it's component output for a reason. I don't even think any of the 6600s have S-Video in unless it's through a dongle.
