My wife n i just bought a new home n we finally looking to buy a Projector instead of the new ledtv. Is this a good idea? our budget is around 5-8k including sound system. So please help me find a good projector n screen(grey or white), n a good sound system. Thx.
Loves2Watch 11-14-2009, 01:08 PM Projector - Panasonic AE4000, less than $2k.
vujen 11-15-2009, 11:59 PM thx Loves2Watch. im looking at the jvc hd550 so what is the different on the picture quality between the two. Projector - Panasonic AE4000 vs. hd550.
jkkyler 11-16-2009, 06:56 AM I wholeheartdly agree with L2W and the PT-AE4000. Outstanding pic quality and independent zoom focus settings allow both 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 aspect ratios to be displayed eliminatng the need for anamorphic lens. This leaves 3-5K for sound - more than enough to get a 'top of the line' sound sysytem. If you are looking for a fixed screen I reccomend either Carada or Stewart.
Chris Gerhard 11-16-2009, 09:28 AM I wrote a response that was wiped out earlier when I tried to post it and the forum went down. I don't feel like trying to rewrite it now but basically, the JVC HD550 might be too expensive for your budget and leave enough for speakers, amplifier, screen, and cables. I do think it is a great idea to go with front projection providing you have a room you can dedicate to a home theater. The Epson Home Cinema 8500UB and as mentioned the Panasonic PT-AE4000U would be at the top of my list to consider in that given price range. There isn't much information yet on those two new projectors but here is a preliminary comparison at Projector Central. Things you need to know are room dimensions, ambient lighting, desired screen size and some idea of primary uses for the projector to make the correct decisions.

The AVSForums will have a lot of discussion and reviews and opinions as I expect these two projectors will be popular.

vujen 11-16-2009, 10:54 PM well, i have done more research on the panasonic and the epson and i have learned that the contrast ratio and the black level is not nearly as good as the jvc hd550.

I believe there are JVC DiLA projectors, including the HD550, that are better than these LCD projectors but I don't believe that statement is accurate. How did you learn that black level is not nearly as good? My research would make me believe these new projectors are close and how much one is willing to pay for an incremental improvement becomes important. I do believe you would be extremely happy with the JVC HD550 but it is much more expensive. Limiting the amount left to spend on a 7.1 sound system might be an issue if you do buy the HD550.

vujen 11-17-2009, 08:50 AM Chris- thanks for taking ur time n helping me out with this issue. Well i been searching on the web and the majority are saying jvc is the way to go. Now i found a person that willing to sale his jvc-rs2u, and i believe that is the hd750, for 3500, then i will have 4500 left for a system n a decents screen. is this a good buy? thx
ZeosPantera 11-23-2009, 11:23 AM You have seen the light my brother. To hell with panel televisions. Long live the front projector!!
OK. If you go with a JVC HD550 your looking at 5 grand on that. So a budget of 5-8K is now 8K automatically.
For a screen you have to say if you want Fixed or retractable. And a rough size limit. No sense in spending 5k on a projector and getting just a 72" screen.
If Fixed your looking at Just under $1000. Its actually cheaper for a spring pulldown of the same or similar material.
A decent amount of room for the Surround sound stuff with 2k left in a budget. I will post my thoughts when I return.
vujen 11-29-2009, 10:45 PM thx zeos for taking ur time to help me with my project. Just got back from Turkey vacation. My mind is set on sony vw85 n b&w suround speaker. Will post some pics when im done with my dream theater room. But im still hestitating between a vw85 an the jvc hd750 though.

I agree on the JVC over the Panasonic. LCoS based projectors, either JVC D-ILA or Sony SXRD products are a notch above in picture quality over most LCD projectors.
The Sony is also worth looking at. I have a VPL-VW100 that I really have, and still do enjoy. I'm throwing a 116" wide image. Don't scrimp on the screen and and blackouts surrounding it.

Actually if you haven't seen the new Panasonic AE4000 you might want to hold up on that assessment. Check out the reviews and see one for yourself, you will be truly amazed and at a price less than half of what the others considered are going for.
Go to projector central if you don't believe me but I must say mine is spectacular especially considering the price paid. How does it compare to my Runco, better than you would imagine...

I recommended the Panasonic to a friend as an upgrade in his theater. He had a firm under $2500 budget and had money left over. For the price it throws a truly awesome image and had the best color balance for any LCD projector I have ever seen in that price range.
The AE4000 had menu features that I wish my Sony included as well.
I just think LCoS has a little more "UMPH" to it IMHO.
Bang for the buck is a big factor when dropping the cash these days, and the Panasonic does deliver in that department.
whiteE92 12-04-2009, 05:42 PM The high end LCOS projectors are definitely very very nice looking, but they are pricey too. To drop 3-4k+ for something that will depreciate rapidly is not really worth it IMO.
I would go for the Panny, the differences are hard to notice, but indeed the native black levels of the LCOS projectors are very impressive and Panny has been a bit notorious for screwy auto-iris. Just my $0.02...
