MPC-HC and MKV

this may have been posted before but i couldn't seem to find it.

anyway i am looking for x.264 clips specifically *.mkv files
all of the content i see posted here is *.avi or WMV
could someone please point me in the right direction?

i want to see the result of using MPC-HC to offload the video to my GPU but can not find the correct files to do it.

are most HD *.avi files already encoded with *.MKV or is that a specific file extension?

x264 clips are usually mkv or mp4. both can be played with mpc-hc and splash player using hardware acceleration. i use splash coz looks much better and uses less cpu.
