Another Speaker Placement Question

I know this has been discussed at length in other threads, but I want to be sure about this.

I have the Onkyo HT-S7100 package, and am only setting it up to a 5.1 system.

So it's correct to use the surround left and right in the back, and not use surround back left and right correct?

Also, my couch sits flat against the back wall with no option to move it forward. So is it better to mount the back speakers on a stand directly to the left and right about 2 feet above the listening position, or to put them on a mount in the very upper corners of the room near the ceiling?

And whatever method is deemed best how should the speakers face?

Thanks for any help.

Correct but the surrounds should be ideally be placed on the sides of the listening area - don't have a link off hand but if you search on this site their are numerous diagrams and I believe the onkyo system will have a diagram.

As Jkkler stated, that is correct. You want to leave out the Surround Backs in a 5.1 setup. I think your confusing the surround speaker placement with the back speaker placement. You want to place your surround speakers to the side of your main seating area pointed twords you (like in the diagram below) the best as possible. The surrounds don't need to be as close to ear level as the fronts and can be elevated a bit if needed.
