Cygnus 11-05-2009, 08:07 PM I am sure the SDF will jump in and say "Bu-bu-but these guys are perfectionists!" What a joke: 5+ years and $60+ million..still with no official US release date for gran torino 5?? Meanwhile Forza has come and set the standard in console sims...
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/05/gran-turismo-5-cost-roughly-60-million-to-develop/
Yamauchi roughly calculated the cost of creating Gran Turismo 5: a cool $60 million. That's what five years of development on a single game has cost Polyphony Digital thus far, an amount Yamauchi says was totally justified in order to "get it right."
"We threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch ... It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4."
Making a game better than Forza 3 ain't cheap.

Forza 3 did set the bar. The game is a 10/10 in my book. But GT5 will annihilate it entirely.

 those pictures are so beautiful they deserve to be seen twice!!!
btw who in the hell (except for share holders) cares how much a game costs to develop:what: it could cost triple that and it still wont make a difference to me, in fact this thread should be changed into the screenshot thread for GT5:thumbsup:
Pinoy 11-05-2009, 09:46 PM So it cost $40 million LESS than GTA4? Or perhaps we should say it cost them less than $2 from every copy of GT ever sold... Big deal.

I don't know about that yet. The graphics in Forza 3 are going to be tough to beat. It is going to be hard to annihilate a game that has set the bar so high. I still can't believe how good F3 is, but I was also never a fan of the GT series.
We will see though, as a game that costs that much better be damn good.
The cost is not as much as some might think, its the dev time that has me perturbed, I am not a racing sim fan, they can be fun and Forza 3 definitely had my intrest and scaled really well to my lack of skills.. But to my point, if I were a fan I would be pissed to wait 5 years for a game, I would move on. Since soo many people are not moving on, I can safely assume its one hell of a game.

I remember thinking the same thing when I was playing F355 Challenge on my Dreamcast "How can Gran Turismo 3 beat this?" It didn't beat it, it fucking blew it out of the water.
The first Gran Turismo title on a console has generally raised the bar in visuals to a whole new level each time. (Be it GT1 on the PS1, GT3 on the PS2 or GT Mobile). I have no doubt my eyes will bleed at the visuals on GT5... then after a week I'll realise it's still the same old GT with a pretty coat of paint and be bored again
Oh Polyphony, how you sucker me in each and every time with those seductive graphics... then given me a 32bit racer in a higher resolution :p
Cygnus 11-06-2009, 08:37 AM The huge difference is GTA4 was released on 360, PC, and PS3 with 360 exclusive DLC. gran torino 5 will only be on PS3. Thus I doubt it will ever be profitable, sorta like the PS3 itself. "Big deal" indeed ;)

You do know the 360 will never be profitable either right?

Not with the amount of money MS must be paying him to continue to spread his FUD...
EddieDZ 11-06-2009, 09:51 AM how much did forza 3 cost to develop.. im sure it wasnt a few million either. what killed GT5 in terms of cost is the time spent on it... any game being made for 5 freaking yrs is going to cost a lot regardless if its for PS3 or 360.
by the way, those screenshots are fucking jaw dropping!! i havent seen any screenshots lately of GT5, the last ones i saw were from like E3 when they finally showed for the first time vehicle damage... this game is going to be so photorealistic

I have a feeling that it wouldn't be profitable because none of them really have.

And look how well GTA4 turned out. Sorry to say, despite it's big sales, the game kinda sucked IMO. The layer of dust on it I had to blow off yesterday as I packed it up to move was incredible.
The GT franchise has sold over 50,000,000 copies and every full iteration of GT (not prologues or concept or PSP versions) has sold an average of 11 million copies each. Yeah... I'm sure it'll flop. Even if it does like I said: Big deal, as long as I get to play it.

Not to mention in the past it has been a system seller. There are people who will buy a PS3 just for GT5.

Haha. Zing!
We need the smiley with the drum set.
GT5 will indeed annihilate the competition as it has done in the past. Their is no way I'm playing this game on my current TV need an upgrade to take in those mighty graphics. Kamspy best pics ever dude where you get them from if you can put up some more.
Pinoy 11-07-2009, 02:51 AM Devs typically make $12-18 on every copy sold, first party devs a little bit more... you've got to be crazy to think PD won't at least break even. Not to mention GT6 will be faster and cheaper on development.
MikeRox 11-07-2009, 10:26 AM Do you mean publishers Pinoy? I know on a UK copy the developer can make as little as £2-3 per sale. (The publisher get about £5-8) nearly 50% goes to the retailer and then £8ish goes to the console manufacturer.

From what I understand the console manufacturer takes about $10 in licensing, about $20 to the retailer, $12-18 to the publisher, $12-18 to the developers. Of course that all surely depends on who the publisher is and a lot of other variables and there is no absolute hard rule... but we're talking a first party game published by the console manufacturer, it seems that the devs would get a break on publishing fees in that scenario.

Yeah, that is exactly how I felt with the Ridge Racer series as well. I used to be a huge fan until I realized that it is the same damn game over and over again.
Judging from what i've seen in past GT games, Forza 3 is going to continue to be the king for casual players, although hardcore players may find something new in GT5. I have never been a GT fan because I straddle the middle where I am not a hardcore sim fan, but I want a little more than a sissy arcade racer. Forza 2 and 3 have done an absolutely perfect job of coming in between for players like me.
The GT series in the past have often left me frustrated at times. We will see though because I also tend to be someone who gets suckered in when graphics get really good. I am considering picking up a BDP early next year after Christmas, and am debating between a PS3 or the new Oppo BDP that looks to be the next bargain in higher end stuff.
MikeRox 11-08-2009, 04:18 PM Metropolis Street Racer (and later on PGR games) were the sweet spot for me between arcade and sim. However, I can forgive Ridge Racer for not evolving very much simply because the games are so thrilling and better graphics work for them. I have always felt as GT matured visually, the game itself increasingly looked dated (GT3 was the pinnacle of it with how terrible the AI still was etc.)

The PGR series is way too arcade for me. Forza does such a good job because you can customize everything that you can possibly think of in a game. Everything can be customized to be a full blown arcade racer, or a full blown simulator with arguably the best in game physics ever used in a racing game. No matter what playing style or what difficulty level you prefer, they let you customize it exactly how you want it.
Same goes for the cars. I really enjoy their performance rating index that classifies the performance level of each car as you can simply buy a 100% stock car, or buy a much lower PI car and mod it to a much higher performance level. I have several stock vehicles, and I also have a lot of class E or B cars that i've modded to compete in Class A or S events.

:hithere: Might be my motivation to finally pick one up, Does look slightly better than Forza. If the gameplay is still the same as the other GT games I will probably just keep playing Forza as it always seemed more life like to me...

Your first post here is trolling Gran Turismo in a Gran Turismo troll thread?
Oh, I guess that's kinda what we do here......
Carry on.....for now.-_-

It doesn't look like he is trolling to me as he is giving his 2 cents on the topic. Now if he would have come into this forum going

I'm down for a B Class showdown on Road Atlanta.

I prefer the Nurburgring but I also like Road Atlanta a lot. If you would like, my gamertag is junehhan and you can look me up. I generally only have time to play on Friday and Saturdays.
I have been so busy with the single player season mode that I have yet to try out the multiplayer on it.
I didn't know you got a X360 as I remembered that you only had a PS3 a long time ago. I've only recently started participating in this forum again as my schedule is less crazy than before.
kamspy 11-10-2009, 08:48 PM I just wanna see how my little project fares against human A.I.
No one I know really plays the game and the public races online get pretty bumpy really quick.
And IIRC you live around Cincy so we should get a good ping.
