I cant get satellite 61.5 because of my neighbors trees, but was wondering if sat. 129 would help me get the voom channels? The installer said they now have access to this satellite but wasn't sure what it would offer. He also told me they were under some sort of regulation requiring them to go to a one dish system?? Which would require them to bounce the voom channels to some other satellite, Right???

Currently, 10 Voom channels are only at 61.5 sat. There's a rumor is that when they pick up the rest of the Voom channels they might be at the 129 sat in the MPEG4 format.

He also told me they were under some sort of regulation requiring them to go to a one dish system??

This only as to do with selected markets that have local channels split between the main sat location (110/119) and also have more local channels on a wing sat (61.5/148)

The 61.5 sat is presently the only one with the Voom HD channels. They also will expand 11 more on that satellite by year end. Not sure if they will be MPEG2 or 4. Nothing is on 129 and no announcement have been made so far. There are lots of rumors but before investing in a dish1000 I'd wait for the offical report.

Not to sound stupid but how will changing to an MPEG format change the HD receivers? I am in the process of trying to purchase a new HD receiver and it is really expensive.....$549, and I am scared that it will be a waste of money if they are fixing to obsolete these receivers....HELP!!!

Both Dishnetwork and DirecTV are planning on encoding their data streams using mpeg4 instead of the normal mpeg2. This will double (at least) the number of channels per satellite compared to the existing mpeg2. This also will mean a new generation of receivers because they must now contain a mpeg4 decoder chip (simular to a processor chip). The first to be affected will be HD because of the amount of bandwidth they take up but eventually all SD will be included (but that may take 3 years).
What is not known is what HD channels will be mpeg4 and what plans they have in replacing receivers for the people that are affected. As far as when this will happen could be by year end or sometime in 2006 (most likely).

Thanks for the info.......I don't want to wait until 2006 to get HD and the only deal I can find with a DVR will cost me 549.00 + having to buy an additional dish. No one knows of any lease deals with DVR for existing customers do they? I get a different answer from DN customer service every time I call!

UPDATE: The 129 sat may become the Voom mirror for the west coast.
