Went to BB, learned a little, laughed a little

I went to BB tonight to actually lay my eyes upon the P50S1 and it looked pretty good. It was next to a few LCD's which were of course much brighter in picture, but from reading on this site, I know not to be tricked by it.

The girl was nice, but halfway through the discussion a geek squad guy came in a started putting in his two cents. I noticed an LED tv that was playing the same movie (Transformers 2) as the P50S1 but I noticed a BIG time difference. The LED panel looked like it was broken or something. The Blu-ray looked almost TOO real, to the point of fake. It looked like the actors were all IN the monitor itself, not on the film. They looked almost 3D, and when the camera panned over to a different shot it looked slow motion or something.

Anyway, I knew right away that I was seeing the "soap opera" effect. Never a truer description for that phenomenon. What is it about soap operas that give them that "look", because that is exactly what they do. Anyway, he edumacated me on the "True Motion" technology and showed me how to turn it off. However, as soon as he turned it off, the fast motion scenes got NOTICEABLY blurrier. The Transformers were all just blurs of color when they were fighting, whereas on the P50S1, they looked nice and clean.

Anyway, he told me that the difference between Plasma refresh rates and LCD refresh rates is that the Plasma screens are separated into sections and that each section has a specific refresh rate of say 60. so 10 sections at 60Hz each = the 600 on the fact sheet. Is that true?

I want to be SURE before I buy this thing that I will be enjoying the most blur-free movies and games. I want my games to run at 60 FPS. Is that going to happen with this TV?

I understand that movies are all recorded at like 30 Hz right? So I know not to expect them to run at 60, but games will right?

Actually movies are filmed at 24Fps not 30Fps. ;)

The 600Hz is not for 10 sections but rather each pixel has 10 parts to each (in layman's terms) as this is referring to the sub-drive of the plasma. It does likely help some with motion since when they went from 480Hz sub-drive in 2008 models to 600Hz they increased the moving resolution from 900 lines to 1080p lines of moving resolution.

Isn't having knowledge in advance better when you go to these stores?

I can't wait to go to BB this weekend and take a look at the differences. I've never even considered a plasma until I joined this forum, and now, I'm all about the V10. :)
Thank you in advance for my future purchase!

If you're all about the V10, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I've had mine for three weeks and I can tell you it's awesome.

The soap opra effect of the 240hz is really a strange look. I didn't like it at all and is what added to me returning my 8000 LED. I'm much happier with my plasma now and no blur. I belive it is jutter setting that causes the 3d soap opera look. When I had mine I set the blur redution to 10 and the jutter to 0 so at least I had all the blur help I could get without the 3d look. Still got blur though.
