Blur in STD channels on Sony LCD

I have a newly purchased Sony KDL-46XBR4.
Verizon FIOS HD motorolla box connected via HDMI cable.

When on a STD channel, it's often a little blurry is the best way to describe it. Edges of objects aren't sharp.

The TV says it's displaying in 480p.

On the STB, in options, settings
Video format is set to 1080i
There is an option for SD override.
Options are off, 480i, 480p and stretch - I have it set to 480p (and don't know if that's a right choice

The TV also has motion enhancer which is set to standard on all inputs (options are off, standard and high - i assume this is the 120Hz thing).

So, two basic questions
1. I dont know what 480i vs 480p is and which I should have it on on the STB

2. How (or can I) get rid of this 'blur' - or better yet, what is the best setting for watching SD TV on this TV?

Thanks so much for anyone's help!

I don't know all the specifics of your TV, but the basic thing is that SD looks like crap on a big screen flat panel. Not a whole lot you can do about it. I would not watch SD in stretch mode, however, as I would think it would make the picture even worse.

SD is broadcast in 420I (interlaced) 420P is "progressive" which is a better picture, but not HD. Most DVD players will play in 420P. I don't know if your TV is capable of converting the signal.

The real answer is to get HD.

There is no way to get rid of the blur you see on SD channels. That's just the nature of the SD beast. Your FIOS box is "upconverting" the 480i signal to 480p. But it's not really a 480p picture that you're watching. It's actually best to set your FIOS box to 1080i for everything, since your TV's native resolution is 1080p. By the way, i = INTERLACED and p= PROGRESSIVE. A 1080i signal is displayed by showing every other line 30 times a second. A 1080p signal is displayed by showing all 1080 lines 60 times a second. You didn't say whether or not you actually have HD programming. If you don't, you're wasting your HDTV. :)

Thanks for the response

I have lots of HD, but not everything is in HD (e.g. my son watching Noggin :))

Actually i have to disagree with you on this. Most HDTVs do a better job scaling & also deinterlacing so if possible the STB should be set to bypass or native so that the resolution source does not get up-scaled by the cable/sat box.
