Got cats?

Hi all-
My first post here!
My question is this: how strong is the glass on a typical LCD TV? Could my cats potentially damage it? I have a Sony 1080p 46" LCD and now I have 2 new Siamese kittens that are obviously fascinated by it. It is on a stand on top of a cabinet that they can access. There is a 6" strip along the front of the cabinet where they can walk by along the screen. I don't think that they could "paw" the glass hard enough to hurt it, could they? Assume that it is mounted so that it won't tip over-- just worried about the glass.
Thanks in advance!!

Hi - I have cats.... but I must say, they could care less about my new TV! You should be ok... the only worry would be if they had their claws out while pawing at it, but most cats will just paw at a TV and not use their claws. Cats get bored quick... once the fascination wears off you shouldn't have to worry! Good Luck!

Yes, I have cats! :D I would not expect there to be a problem with the glass nor would I expect the cat to touch the screen with much if any pressure. Our cat plays with images on the screen by batting at them but not actually touching the screen. YMMV.

If it is a matte screen then they COULD hurt it if they pawed at it with their claws out. Several people have posted that their cat did this, so it could be a really issue.

If you truly have a glass screen (should be very shiny like glass) then you would be ok I would think, but I do not have cats.

I would think anyone with cats should make sure they get a glass (shiny) screen on their HDTV as it offers much more protection from this kind of thing.

Hope this helps & welcome to the forum!

Thanks, all!
The screen looks matte-- and PFC5, I get what you're saying about that. And when I look closely, I can see faint cat paw prints on the screen. I knew that little imp was up there while I was gone!
I really don't like the idea of her (I know which one it is ;)) getting up there and pawing the screen so I'm going to have to figure out a way to keep her away-- probably mount the LCD up high. Or set up an invisible electric fence perimeter :D This one is just crazy enough to go leaping across the room at a golf ball flying across the screen so better safe than sorry.

Hi Fritz, welcome to the forum.
I have glass, but my computer monitor is matte, and my cats never touch it, they have access to my desk. PFC5 is right, some here have had that issue with their furbabiez. Some here have had an issue with them chewing on wires too. Mounting would be the best thing to do.:)

If ya get a chance check out this thread, it's for kitty lovers.

I have seven cats, and over the years my experience has been that the kittens under a year old are curious and attracted occasionally to the screen. As they age, cats eventually lose interest and pay no attention to the displays.

I have had no screen damage to any of my RP and flat panel TVs.

people don't think its possible but you can train your cats. have a squirt bottle ready and whenever you see them get up there try and spray them without spraying the tv... easier said than done. also some cats really hate loud noises, when they get up there get close to them quickly and clap really loud to scare them down. they'll eventually learn that getting up there gets them wet or they'll hear a really loud sound and stop getting up.

A water squirt bottle is the best training aid for cats there is. :stop
