Samsung47" 11-03-2009, 07:49 AM Okay guys and gals, im wondering if anyone can help me with a small issue i have been having with my ps3. I have a Panasonic TCP50S1 Plasma tv. Its about 6 months old. Hooked up to my ps3 via HDMI cable. It has been hooked up for months and works great. How ever sometimes when i turn on the ps3. It asks comes up with a message saying i have an avaiable hdmi hooked up and asks if i would like to use it ?? But it has been hooked up that way for months. It has asked me this 3 or four times over the last two weeks. It is a 160GB ps3. The last one just before the new slim i think. Its almost 1 year old ( December ) . It is running the newest firmware 3.01 . It works perfect after i say yes to running hdmi. Blu-ray movies work, games and regular dvd's all work perfect. Just this annoying message every once in awhile when its turned on. :banghead:
Could i be holding the reset/power button to long on turn off or turn on causing it to soft reset the video settings or is there something wrong with my ps3 and it not keeping its settings ?? Please help !!
Thanks..... Any input would be great !!!

Sounds like a handshake issue. What is the order you turn things on? I remember some posts about some ritual to avoid hand shake issues (I've never had one, but then again my TV and PS3 are both Sony products so who knows.)
You can try this sequence and see whats if anything happens:
Turn on PS3 > Turn on TV > Put TV to Input Channel
Or try
Turn on TV > Put TV to input channel > turn on PS3
I forgot which sequence causes handshakes issues, I think it was having the TV on before the PS3, but (shrugs) try one.

I have one of last years Panny plasmas, and I've never gotten that message when there's a handshake issue. I either get wonked out video or no video at all. Usually turning the PS3 off and back on again fixes the issue. Sometimes I have to turn everything off and then back on (PS3 last) to get it all working again.
Same thing happens with my 360. The TV has to already be on before turning on the 360.
It honestly sounds to me as though you're holding the button too long. Try always turning on the PS3 with the controller.

Now that you mention that he could be getting the PS3 automation setup message. I didn't think that was the issue.
When turning on the PS3 using the console itself, just lightly tap the power button, it's pretty sensitive. Don't at all hold it. If you hold it for 5 seconds on boot the system will beep twice and kick into Auto Setup mode, which would ask you fi you want to use HDMI or Component, yad ayada, what for audio.
I think awol got it this time.

Of course you are. There is no proof of PS3s only bought for Blu-ray playback. Therefore it can't be true. IE you're wrong! :p
Samsung47" 11-03-2009, 10:22 AM Thank You for all of your suggestions !! Like i say, once i answer yes to the hdmi. The ps3 works perfect in every aspect. And now that i think about it. I think that evry time i got the message i THINK was when the ps3 was turned on first when the tv was off. I think . Like said also i might be holding the button too long on turn on. I will try turning on and off with the controller for a bit and see how that works.
I just am hoping that my ps3 isnt broken with a bad hdmi port or something. I cant afford to get it fixed or get a new one. And no warrenty !!

I doubt it's the PS3's HDMI port. If it were, you'd be getting a bunch of other symptoms than just a confirmation to use the HDMI port.

If the PS3 is already on then just grab your tv remote and switch to a different input setting, wait a second, and then switch back to the HDMi input the ps3 is on.
And yeah if you're getting the 'you have an hdmi input' screen you're holding the button too long. It would probably be easier on ya if you use the controller to turn the ps3 on and off.
Samsung47" 11-03-2009, 01:51 PM Really dumb question. But if i am holding the button for too long. which i think i am. How long should someone hold it to turn the ps3 both on and off ??

On: Just touch it. Off: touch it till it beeps then let go. Probably easier for you if you just go to the far left in the XMB and select the 'turn off' option at the top though ;)

To add to this, when you turn it on it should only beep once (indicating its on.) You'll know you've held it too long if you hear it beep, and then afew seconds it beeps again.
