Onkyo HT-S6100 with PS3

Hi everyone,

has anyone had any issues/problems with PS3 connected to HT-S6100? My wife got me a PS3 for my birthday and I hooked it up last night. Everything worked great for about 30-40 minutes, and then the screen started blinking. It would just go black, as if the TV got turned off, then the picture would come back on for a couple minutes, then it would go black again.
The PS3 is connected to the receiver via HDMI. I've googled it and found that a while ago, Westinghouse HDTV would have this issue. But this was happening back in like 2007, so I would assume if this was a PS3 issue it would have been fixed by now.
If I unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in, it fixes the problem for about another 30-40 minutes, but then it happens again.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Sounds like an HDMI handshake issue someplace. If you connect it stait to the TV via HDMI does it work fine? If not it is definately the TV giving the handhake issues. If it does, it may be with the receiver, but I have not seen HDMI handshake issues with the PS3 and 606 receivers. But 1 way around it (if the TV is not the issue) would be to connect directly to theTV via HDMI and optical to the receiver until a fix is found.

That was the 1st thing I did when I first hooked it up.

Probably the handshake issue. Have you done the suggested and run the HDMI from PS3 straight to the HDTV and bypass the reciever? Did it happen when you did this?

Also I had the S6100 for two days. One day setup and another day trouble shooting many many issues. Until I finally returned it after it caused a surge and fried my HDTV.

I was however able to watch Wall E on Blu-ray via my PS3 and in surround sound before this happened. Sounded awesome!

The exact same thing happened to me. The first time it happened, I was frustrated to no end. I was pulling and swapping cables thinking it might be a cable issue. Nope! I tried bypassing the PS3 straight through the TV. It works. WTF, why isn't it working when I run it through the receiver. I'm sure it's an issue between the PS3 and the receiver (I have the same receiver btw). So after connecting my PS3 to my receiver again I powered everything on and then as I was contacting Onkyo and Sony, the "No Signal" on my TV changed to "Searching for Signal" and then the PS3 screen popped up. It was like it needed some warm up time. This took about 5 minutes of waiting. So until I hear back from Onkyo and Sony, I have to go through this 5 minute process of waiting and at this point, I'd rather deal with that then not have nothing. On a side note, this is my second PS3 (slim), and when bitstreaming blu-ray movies, True HD and Master Audio light up on the receiver. It didn't do that with my old PS3.

Indeed. The old PS3 had to be set to "LPCM" in order to send Dolby TrueHD and DTS MasterAudio to your Onkyo receiver. If you were bitstreaming the audio, all you were getting was the core lossy Dolby or DTS signal, not HD audio. I have had mine for over a year and have never had any problems. I'm as stumped as everyone else about this problem that you guys are having. A handshake issue is all that I can come up with, as well.

I too agree that it is a HDCP handshake issue. Maybe Onkyo has some newer firmware...
