Brutal Legend. Is it Brutal?

Have not seen any threads on this so probably not many of you are rocking this out. I seen that this game got prettty good reviews (mostly 8's and 9's) but a couple bashed it giving it only a 6 or so. Over a hundred metal tracks from the 70's, 80's and 90's like Sabbath, Ozzy, Priest, UFO, Megadeth and Motorhead to name a few. I will probably give it a rent 1st and see, but just checking with the HDFG's for some input.

It's definitely brutal, funny, and wickedly awesome... especially if you fancy yourself some metal.

I'm enjoying it. It's a bit different than I had anticipated but overall it's a really fun game. I don't regret purchasing it.

I wrote this review for another forum I frequent, its a good idea you are renting it first. Its really not a bad game, but this game is getting a major pass at all the reviewers as its a Tim Schaeffer game. I dont care who made it, I just want the polish of a AAA title or a game hyped such as this was..

Personally, I think this game rests at a 7. The controls are just really sloppy. I don't hate the game, however, I think it lacks polish. Framerate stutters, freezings, clunky gameplay mechanics, a car that controls like shit (you hit anything and you spin out), repetitive quests, and an escort mission, which when coupled with the shitty car controls = not much fun..

I find the RTS element the most enjoyable part of the game, people dont be fooled this game was built around RTS game play(RTS = real time strategy, think Warcraft 3, starcraft, Halo wars). This game is trying to be a jack of all trades with soo many different game components jammed into one game. Because of that it fails to do anything great or even good and just does everything average or way below.

I like the world, and that is really where my enjoyment is coming from. As the game itself isn't really that enjoyable. Basically, if this wasn't attached to the strong core that is the "Metal World" and having a decent script...I'd think it'd be really, really, really bad.

HUGE metal fan from the late 80's until today. That is the major reason I find the limited info I seen very intriguing. I still love the bands listed above and some I have not heard in a while like Saxon, Slayer, old Scorps like Blackout and Holiday, and old school Crue like Live wire... All on the list. Not a pussy metal fan of bands like Warrant, Poison and crap like that. But I don't see any of that on here.

Most of the reviews were very positive. The couple that were not were disappointed because they expected this to be 1 of the best games ever, and bashed it because it was not. I forgot this was to be released a while ago but fell through the cracks with the Activision merger. They did not seem all too pleased that EA picked this up.

i tried the demo and although the voice acting from Jack Black is funny the overall game play was just your same old button smasher combo stuff from the 90's. cant say much about the overall game but there just wasnt enough there for me to spend the time with it. as a new IP it didnt show anything new for me. i think a 7 would be a good score for this game. graphics also felt dated.

This game is a huge "Your Mileage May Vary".

If you're not a fan of heavy metal, this game ranks around a 6.

For someone who can sing Judas Priest's "Painkiller" while drinking a warm Coors, the game ranks around 9-10.

The combat is not bad, it's just not special. Very run of the mill.

This game is only as good as your appreciation of the environment. All the voice actors are metal related. The game world basically looks like all the Iron Maiden album covers converged into a GTA sized planet. Story telling and everything to do with atmosphere is top notch.

MY ONLY BIG FUCKING GRIPE:

Sharon Osborn decided she was going to pull Ozzy's stuff from the game is the developers went ahead with their Ronnie James Dio character and songs.

This pisses me off to no end. I could only imagine doing some epic climb with Holy Diver playing in the background and facing off with Dio at the top of a giant corpse mountain.

Nope. Thanks a lot Sharon. Doing a great job there killing what's left of metal.

Meh… jack black is annoying in movies so I definitely don’t want to see him in a game…

I agree but his Tenacious D stuff is only slightly short of fantastic and when he's "jack black - rocker" and not "Jack Black - Movie Star" he can actually be pretty enjoyable.

I think Sharon is still a bit bitchy about Ronnie James taking over Sabbath after Ozzie was ousted. They are still out on the 3 year Heaven and Hell tour as we speak. Scene them a few weeks back at Northerly Island and they kicked ass.. again. Ronnie still kicks em out..

Played the demo, it was nice, but from the demo I didn't see the 9-10/10 ratings in it at all. Budget purchase for me... like Psychonauts was meant to be until the sodding thing completely vanished from shelves .

I was really disappointed with the game. Feels awkward and it just inst fun. I'm glad I rented it because I was so close to buying it.

Bought the game. I would give it a solid 8/10. It's a very good game, not a "great" game. Definitely will rank higher for fans of metal, who can also appreciate all of the little jokes and metal touches throughout. Stage battles are kind of awkward.

Finished the game. Still give it a strong 7 or 8 outta 10. Going to mess around with some of the extras and online battles now.

DLC is up for those intending to get this game, the PS3 version has the DLC free for the first fortnight.

Must be bombing at retail, it's already been reduced to £24.99 at GAME (THIS is why I refuse to buy most games full price anymore, it was £49.99 3 weeks ago at release).

Discount applies to the PS3 version too.

I downloaded the DLC for when I buy the game when it reaches $10.

Schaffer bit off more than he could chew it seems.

Still, for a metal fan and a gamer it's a must own. I just don't have the gaming money or gaming time to own it right now.

I don't know what its sales numbers are, but I can say that based on the Gamespot top 10, it was barely cracking the daily hottest titles list just before and after release, and within a week was not to be seen. This seems to be a decent barometer of mainstream interest. It's a good $30 title, for $60 it should have been more, and I definitely appreciate it more than many for the "metalness" of it.:eyecrazy
