I expected as much with the slim and the price drop, but what stands out to me the most is the Madden numbers being so close between 360 and PS3. I'm shocked actually.

Batman also doing better on the Triple.

But, with Madden being that close, MW2 is going to be really interesting.

Wow what a month for consoles, those are huge sales all across the board, the PS3 is not surpising, I figured it would hit over 500k but the holiday season has started so look for a good October and a fantastic November!!!

Kam, how can you call Madden close and its like 40k off? I am shocked that Batman AA (PS3)didnt do more than just 10k more than the 360 version as the joker content was highly advertised..

Joker content or not isnt there like 6 million+ more 360 owners in the US?

You do realize Microsoft had a head start so of course they should have more units sold. If you compare sales of the 360 when the PS3 launched their virtually even. PS3 sales are growing though and their slowly closing that gap.

MS' spin on NPD numbers...

As ever, Microsoft has released a response to the NPD sales results -- revealing some interesting statistics about Halo 3 gameplay and boasting of third-party Xbox 360 sales of $154 million for the month of September.

Selling 1.5 million copies, Halo 3: ODST was the best-selling game of the overall NPD for September 2009; Xbox 360 claimed five of the top 10 titles.

According to Microsoft, since ODST's release, over five million unique players have racked up playtime with the Halo 3: ODST's single-player campaign or Halo 3 and the multiplayer maps showcased on the game's second disc, totaling over 116 million hours of play.

Microsoft's statement also reveals that the Xbox 360 version of Rocksteady and Warner Bros. Interactive's Batman: Arkham Asylum, the PlayStation 3 version of which ranked at eighth place overall, was at 10th place in the console rankings, excluding handheld games.

The only handheld game in the top 10 was Nintendo's Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Barring another handheld title in the 11th spot, this data suggests Batman hit that rank, with potential sales in the neighborhood of 200,000 copies (10th-ranked Wii The Beatles: Rock Band sold 208,600 copies.)

Microsoft claims the lead in revenue for third party game sales in September, with $154 million in sales generated by third parties on the Xbox 360 -- more than the other systems. According to Microsoft, the company's platform has maintained a lead in third party sales dollars for every month of 2009.

Pretty good numbers across the board, I'm surprised the ps2 is even on there still! Good numbers all around (and that's better for us)

That is some spin right there, aren't all 360 games basically 3rd party games

But the 360 userbase is double that of the PS3 in the US. So even being 15-20% out is actually a strong showing from the PS3 version.

I am shocked that Batman sold better on PS3 personally. I thought nobody was interested in the Joker mode and even assuming all the PS3 owners also had a 360 and actually chose the PS3 version because of the additional content, the extra 360 userbase could have more than compensated to give the 360 the sales lead.

Because the hardware sales figures are much wider than 40k.

Shows that a lot of the 360 userbase is more of a "replacement base", and the PS3 is finally getting some exposure as a destination system for 3rd party games.

Hmmm this is quite sad.

Notable new releases that failed to make the overall software top 10 (With no console or handheld version selling more than 208,600 units in the U.S. by October 3):

Dirt 2 (September 8)
LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition (September 8)
Mini Ninjas (September 8)
Muramasa: The Demon Blade (September 8)
Need for Speed: Shift (September 15)
NHL 10 (September 15)
NHL 2K10 (September 15)
Scribblenauts (September 15)
Wet (September 15)
Spyborgs (September 25)
Beaterator (September 29)
Dead Space Extraction (September 29)
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (September 29)
Gran Turismo (October 1)

Scribblenauts inparticular saddens me :( but certainly some "high clout" titles that didn't manage to shift 200k last month. Granted Gran Turismo and Kingdom Hearts inparticular launched very late in the month, but I'm particularly surprised by DIRT 2.

Little Big Planet? Surely a Greatest Hits re-launch would have been the better option? You can get the original for like £10 now in the UK so over here at least I see very little market for a full price GOTY edition regardless of what bells and whistles it includes.

Scribblenaughts is a FANTASTIC game and definitely should be looked at by people. It's well made, difficult to a point, and allows you to be extremely creative. Plus you can have god battle cthulu just by typing it in. That's not enough? :D

Hmmm not really.

When the PS3 launched there were about 6-8 million 360s worldwide. Today there are about 24 million PS3s worldwide and about 32 360s worldwide, which means even on the upper end of my estimate (I can't remember exactly) there would have been zero gain by the PS3.

Good month for video games.

I'm actually surprised the Madden Sales were so low altogether. I was expecting over a million sales total from the PS3/360 versions.

Not surprised about the PS3 (even though I believe the Slim is ugly as hell... there's no way I'd ever trade down from my shiny black monolith to that plasticky looking junk). A price drop always helps sell consoles. The 360 got a ncie jump as well, but seeing as it wasn't a real price drop (just the removal of an SKU) there was no way to really compete. It'd do Microsoft well to lower their prices by an additional $50 early next year.

The PSP Go didn't seem to revive PSP sales at all. No big surprise seeing as how the thing cost so much and just severely gimped the system. I was planning on buying one, but the more information that came out the less sense it amde. My 1000 works great and overall provides more functionality than the Go.

DS and Halo reigns supreme in their repsective categories... big surprise...

Not much more to comment on. Pretty good month for VG companies.

Remember, in an area where the PS3 is strongest, the 360 was available almost 18 months longer there.

True but it doesn't change the fact that there has either been no gain, based on launch numbers for the PS3 as compared to today... or maybe even the 360 gaining a little bit. I can't remember the exact numbers for the 360 when the PS3 launched, but it was somewhere between 6-8 million.

The PSP Go came out a bit too late to really factor in properly, though I honestly don't know who Sony are planning to sell to at the current price. The UK model now that Gran Turismo is no longer included as a free download has already been reduced by several UK retailers to sub £200. (it was £225).

I actually can't wait to get a PSP Go, I love the look of the unit and especially the size, it'll easily fit in my pocket to use on the bus and can just replace my mp3 player in one of my pockets for the commute. I'm also hoping the screen is greatly improved. The 1000 series PSP I had, featured an appaling response time on the screen and ghosting was impossible to ignore. :( it was the only issue with what otherwise would have IMO been the perfect portable console.

Even using it as a MP3 player seems clunky. If the Go's screen were tough sensitive then it would have been a perfect device. As it stands everytime you want to control something on the screen you have to open the thing up and use the game controls... which aren't exactly well suited for much other than gaming.

I'll stick with my 1000... maybe upgrade to a 3000... until an official PSP2 comes out.

This was Madden's second month.

First month was something like

360: 900K
PS3: 600K

still very low numbers overall. if i remember back in 2007 Madden franchise was like the 3rd or 4th largest grossing game franchise and now they have only broke the 2 mill after two months?

I used to use my 1000 as an mp3 player, the only gripe I had was the size. The PSP Go is half the size, which works for me  I just shove it on shuffle anyway so once it's set going, it's not an issue using the controls.

I agree a touch screen would have been nice, especially having seen their latest walkman X series with OLED touch screen display (actual OLED not just backlight :D) which costs around the same price.
