Hello,
I just bought a new 1080p Toshiba 40RV52R model TV. I have my dish network DVR and PS3 system linked up to it via HDMI, and then audio out to my Pioneer VSX-517 receiver from the TV using a monster optical cable.
When watching the dish DVR or the Ps3 in stereo mode, things not using Dolby Digital or DTS, it's fine... But when the signal is Dolby Digital or DTS, it seems the signal isn't properly being transmitted from the optical out on the TV to the stereo, because it doesn't switch, and then I have absolutely NO audio for my blu-rays or Ps3 games.
Anybody have a similar problem? This exact setup worked just fine when I was using it on my 26'' Westinghouse tv with optical output. Thanks!

NEVER hook your equipment into your TV. You hook it into your RECEIVER and then run an HDMI from the receiver to your TV. The optical output on your TV will ONLY output 2.0 stereo sound ( except for some OTA 5.1 signals from your antenna ). If your receiver does not have HDMI inputs, then run optical from your components into the receiver, and the video into your TV. However, optical cables DO NOT carry the HD soundtracks found on Blu-Ray discs. That requires HDMI. While you are here, read a few of the posts on setting up 5.1 systems, as well as any others of interest to you. You will find a wealth of info here. :)

well, believe me, I understand the benefits of running everything out of an HDMI ready receiver... but mine has no HDMI. I don't understand really why this isn't working. When I was using my 26" Westinghouse, I ran optical out to my receiver and it transmitted Dolby Digital and DTS signals just fine for 5.1. :what:

Use the TV for HDMI switching and your receiver for audio switching - that way DD and DTS will be decoded by the receiver.
Or you can add an HDMI 4X1 remote controlled switch:

Bottom line is that your tv only transmits stereo over the optical cable. The only time it sends a 5.1 signal over optical is when the input is a HD signal being decoded by the TV's tuner (most commonly a HD antenna on your house hooked into the coax input on the tv, or a cable tv coax cable hooked directly to the coax, and then tuned to unscrambled OTA signals (usually just the local networks that broadcast in HD in your area, NBC, CBS, Fox, etc).
I'm not sure why your westinghouse output 5.1 when the input was HDMI. I haven't heard of that.

It doesn't/didn't, the receiver takes the stereo signal and outputs Dolby PL II probably.
