Het raiderfan I went ahead & got the NHL 10 today you mentioned I should get. I see you playing it all the time so it must be fun.

I have played 2 games & I use the Columbus Blue jackets...I lost to Buffalo 2-1 in overtime & I beat Montreal 2-1.
The game seems to be alot of fun as I haven't played a hockey game since I had an Intellivision when I was a kid.

I have two things I need some serious work on I see.
One is winning a faceoff...it seems like I lose every freaking one of them. I am looking at the stats of the Montreal game & I lost 20 & won 3...that's bad.
Second is I can't make a decent pass at all as it seems so hard. I guess I will learn with playing more.
But if you got any tips on those two things I need them :helpme

Oh yeah one more thing, I have only played these two games & my left thumb is killing me :crying: :gamer :crying:

I figured out the Face Offs & Passing. I suck at them b ut at least I know how.

My question now is when you play on Xbox Live is there a way to get into a match that your opponent has your own skill level?
I played one match last night & the guy just toyed with me in beating me 5-0...it could have been worse as I almost never had the puck on my offensive end of the ice as every time I would move forward he would crash my player & take the puck no matter what I done.

So is there a way as I can't seem to find it but I know EA has that option in Madden so I figured it would be here also.

Thanks for any help! :hithere:

i haven't played online, rosco, but usually there is a way to get matched up with your skill level.

if you find that you suck at passing, you can always adjust the pass assist and/or pass accuracy slider up, to make it easier until you get better.

practice mode is totally useful in this game. you can practice any number of situations and offensive strategy on the ice, and when you lose control of the puck to the defense (if you even want to practice with the defense on the ice), the whistle blows and you go back to center ice with control of the puck, so you can just keep practicing over and over and over. Helps you to see the offense in motion, and helps you to see what shots should be used in certain situations to score.

great game and just about flawless to play -- even against the cpu offline.

Thanks raiderfan as that passing slider helps alot.

This is a real fun game & the thing I was kinda worried about most when I was thinking about ordering a hockey game was that I would never be able to control a goalie but they actually made it easy imo & it is alot of fun blocking those shots.

I've never done that either, rosco!!

I always let the AI control my goalie, and take my chances.

Well my goalie is the MVP of my team, while he may give up 1-3 goals in a game(5 a couple times) & he gets about 40 saves wich means my offense completely sucks!!!
I cannot keep control of the puck for near the time my opponent does. And I usually only have around 15 shots on goal. I can make a couple passes, wich is a couple more than I was making, but if I keep trying to pass like the CPU does I lose the puck with either an interception or the reciever just let's it go by.
And most of the shots I get on goal are what looks like good shots but they NEVER freakin go in :banghead: :banghead: I just played the Round Robin style tournament they have on here & played 4 games tonight & I have scored 1 goal :o :o :o I gave up 12 goals.
I gotta work on my offense, not that I have great defense but it doesn't matter if my defense was great you can't win if you can't score. And I get smoked in those OT Shoot outs everytime.

It's wierd cause I really do suck at this game but at the same time I love playing it so much I won't hardly put the handle down until my thumbs can't take no more  I really am glad I got it I just gotta get better.

def check out the practice mode, then. It will totally help your offensive game.

when you do have control of the puck, make sure you utilize the protect puck option (A button). it will allow you to skate and hold the puck away from the defender. When you shoot, MAKE SURE you are holding in the LT (Vision Control). It will make your offensive guy square up to the net so you can get much better accuracy on any of your shots. It also helps with passing. In fact, once i cross center ice, i hold LT constantly to pass and shoot -- makes a huge difference.

On defense, when the cpu has the puck in your zone, utilize the Block Shot option (if you haven't switched to your goalie yet). Holding LB and RB down together will make your defender drop to the ice and attempt to block the cpu's shots. Works quite well. Also when the puck is against the boards and the cpu gets to it right before you, don't go right to a body check against the boards. Instead, skate towards him and hold down Y, that will pin him against the boards and allow time for your teammates to come over and get the puck. Or if you don't want to wait for your teammates, you can hit LB to Poke Check the puck away from the boards.

Bottom line is: utilize the practice sessions for offense and defense to get used to all of the controls and how the offensive scheme works. The days of skating down the ice with one dude, shooting and scoring or the days of skating around on defense just body checking the shit out of every cpu player are gone. Much more strategy involved and practice is needed. I've had the game for some weeks now, and just started my franchise the other day!!

That holding the A button to protect the puck works great! Thanks as I am able to get very close to the net more without getting the puck stolen.
And this is funny I thought...I took your advice & did not control my goalie the whole game & I was up 1-0 with about 3 minutes left. So me being the genius I am started messing with the goalie & gave up 2 goals in the last 3 minutes & lost :banghead: what makes it worse is I was playing the worst team I could find, Nashville. :o
I had played the practice mode when I first got the game & trid it again but I get so bored after about 10 minutes of it that I hate to play that way when I could be playing another team & getting my butt kicked instead

One other thing is I read up on the Vision & like you said I tried it but I honestly can't see nothing different to help my game. The book says it makes it easier to pass & stuff but I don't see it. Oh well I will keep on trying.
Thanks a whole lot raiderfan for all the help you have given me as it makes the game funner to play when you know more. Have a great day! :hithere:

If you press LT when you are in the offensive zone, you will see your guy square his shoulders to the net, getting himself in line to take a shot. Holding LT also lets you do more complex dekes, than doing dekes w/out.

You'll also find that a lot of your goals will come by the way of "garbage goals". Kick the puck out to one of your defensemen, setting them up for a one-timer slapshot, the shot deflects off the goalie and one of your forwards gets the rebound and puts it right back in.

You will definitely have to mix up your shot variety to get results. Trying to rush the goalie deking your brains out won't get it done this year.

That is so true. At first was trying to give the puck to Steve Nash & use him all the way up the ice & shoot...no good.

And most of my goals have been when it gets all crazy around the net sfter I take the first shot.

Too bad I can't shoot like that 9 year old kid they showed on Sportscenter yesterday...

that was sweet!

I don't know about you rosco, but when i score a goal, i get mad pumped and start throwing my fists in the air and yelling shit out!!! That's how hard you have to work for the goal. And when your playing at home, the crowd gets pumped up like crazy, which also contributes to my enthusiasm!! I actually have to stop and look around to make sure my girlfriend wasnt standing there watching me or to make sure i didn't wake the baby!!!:o:lol:

haha!! me too! I also have the "on ice sound" slider (or whatever its called) up to the max as well, so i can here the players "chatter" while they play and here the skates scrape against the ice and things like that!! :D

the commentary in this game is incredible, too, imo...

Well I have been beaten enough, I am turning it on Rookie for awhile & see if i can't win a few. I think I have played about 25 games & won 2 of them & those were against the Tampa Bay Lightning & I think the other was Nashville...as you know those are probably 2 of the worst teams on here if not the 2 worst.
Another reason is I have never scored more than 3 goals & usually no more than one. Those good goalies are almost impossible to score on imo, at least for a rookie like me. That guy for the Canucks is like a brick wall. And the Bruins guy shut me out twice & had some unreal stops.
I have found a decent way to score sometimes. My best player is Rick Nash so when I am on offense & he is in there I pass it 3-4 times till I see him get close to the goal then fire a shot & sometimes he takes the miss & fires it right in the goal.
But I am sticking with it as I said before I may be terrible but I am hooked on playing this game as it is alot of fun.

raiderfan

Goalies ARE tough, this year. I guess its in response to them being much easier last year and allowing "cheap" goals (i didn't play '09, i'm just going by what i have read). Anyways, you can adjust the cpu goalie reaction time slider down to 0. Thats what i have my settings at and its still a challenge. The most goals i have scored in a game has been 4.

I get my slider settings from another forum, and all of the ones that i have looked at for Pro and All-Star level have the cpu goalie reaction time set to 0, so its obviously a challenge for everyone. I'm just afraid on Rookie, that the cpu will be way too stupid and allow my guys to skate where i want and pass to who I want each time. But hey, get some practice on it, and then move up when you are comfortable.

I'm currently on Pro with a slider set that i like, with the St. Louis Blues and I am currently 3-3, in my Franchise. If you want more info on the slider sets and where to find them, send me a PM and I'll give you more info about them and where to find them.

Hey Rosco... Looks like there is a patch (aka Title Update) coming for NHL 10 by November 5th. Here are some of the fixes:

Here are a couple of the key fixes that we've made in the Title Update:

Fixed the exploit to slap-shot a 5-hole goal from below the face-off circle.Although our goalies are much improved in NHL 10, there was an exploit when shooting from below the face-off circle that resulted in a goal more often than not. The goalies are now tuned to better handle shots from this area.
Increased speed of passes with Manual passing on.

This year we added Hardcore Passing (manual passing) that gave you total control of your pass speed and direction. Overall, the new passing was well received but the consensus was that you should be able to pass the puck harder and that the bottom-end speed was too slow. We've increased the bottom-end speed so the passes are crisper and also increased the top-end slightly as well.

Reduced the ability to boardplay players who are far away from you.

It was a little unrealistic being able to 'suck' a player into boardplay as he was skating away from you so we've made it much harder to pin a player that is skating away. The further he is from you, the less likely you'll be able to boardplay him.

Tuning of trade logic.

Too many superstars were being offered up for trades so we've dialed this back along with reducing how often players are repeatedly offered up for trade.
Added the ability for a user to apply boost slots to authentic helmets.

We've added the ability to apply boost slots to an authentic helmet so users can get the benefit of the boosts without having to wear a helmet with a design on it.

Here are some of the other main fixes that will be in the Title Update:

Fixed the bug that would make a player sometimes exit pass blocking (L1/LT) when they got close to their goalie.

Fixed the bug that would prevent offline Be a Pro player from getting ice-time in some situations.

Fixed a crash that could happen on delayed penalty shots.

Improved logic for how fighting affects teamplay scores in Be a Pro.

Prevent L1/LT from allowing players to bypass stumble animations.

Improvements to goalies to reduce 5-hole goals in some contexts.

Tuned thresholds for injuries from hard shots.

Added the ability to escape a prefight circle by pressing L2/LB.

Fixed the bug that made it possible to "shoot" a puck slowly out of the one-
handed animation such that nobody could pick it up.

Improved goalie aggressiveness when poking the puck on cross-crease passes.

Improved the ability of defencemen are able to do puck pickups behind them to help defend cross-crease passes.

Reduced the ability to stuff the puck through the goalie by running into him without shooting (most common on wraparounds and reaching puck pickups).

Reduced accidental interference in front of net.

Fixed the offline Be a Pro line-change bug where the player is stuck at the bench.

Prevent slap passes from being deflected at large angles.

Fixed the bug where the goalie does not react to a shot if he's banging his stick on the ice to signal the end of a penalty.

Fixed the bug that makes flip dumps to the middle of the offensive zone go over the glass frequently.

Fixed the bug that makes CPU center win draws to the the same side all of the time.

Fixed the bug in the stat tracking of passing.

Prevent accidental saucer passes after receiving the puck while trying to poke check (because both actions are on R1/RT).

Tuning to reduce occurrence of tripping penalties when the player being tripped is stationary or moving slowly.

Tuning to game logic to make it a little easier to stay up on the NHL team during 4-game trial in BAP.

Many other changes to improve our ability to refine the gameplay tuning with via tuner sets.

Well instead of dropping to rookie level I am gonna try turning the Goalie to zero reaction time also & stay at pro. Hopefully I can win some this way.
I played one game on rookie late last night I think i played Calgary & I lost 3-2 but I felt like I was in the game the whole time & could have easily won. Plus I have been trying to lay off using my goalie & I think that helps. The main thing I don't like about rookie level is they keep having a pop-up in the bottom left corner with a tip...it is kind of annoying I think.

Thanks again for the tips as I getting ready to give em a try.

drbrosco
10-21-2009, 11:40 PM
I finally whipped another team

Actually I decided to try a real good team against a weak one & I won!...LoL...I used PITT & played Colorado & won 3-0. I could really tell a huge difference between playing with PITT & playing with Columbus as with PITT I was on the offensive side & on the attack alot compared to hardly ever being on my offensive side or on the attack playing with Columbus.

Columbus is definitely my team to root for in real life but as far as the game I may start playing with PITT full time to make up for my weaknesses.
The new call of duty is out in 3 weeks & my game play on NHL 10 may completely drop off so I want to start a franchise & get some wins & I ain't really got time for learning much.

nice rosco!!

i just updated my PM to you, so you will be getting another.

yeah, i play with the blues. I'm no hockey guru, but to me they are an avg team, i think. I'm 3-3 and will keep playing with them. If the title update forces me to start over to take affect, i may pick another team for the hell of it.

keep hitting'em hard, rosco!! The Caps are a nice team to be for a 'chise, as well, if you decide Pitt is too good ;)

i just tried the Caps & I beat Carolina 3-1, would have been 3-0 but got distracted while they were firing away at my goal.

That Ovechkin is super fast when he has the puck as I have never seen nobody that fast before, but then I have only used Columbus & PITT but Crosby was not this fast. I think I am gonna just go with how I have it set up & use the Caps for a franchise like you suggested cause like I said I loved the speed of Ovechkin when using him & their goalie was very tuff. But I also have no idea if carolina is a lousy, avg, or good team so I may have just beat a cream puff.

I am gonna go find last years standings & play two of the top teams today with the Caps & as long as I don't get blown out twice I am going for it.

I have a couple of questions about stats please...

At the end of every period they show each teams stats...
What is Hits?
What is One-Timers?

Thanks! :hithere:

raiderfan
10-22-2009, 07:08 PM
Hits = Checks, however, i'm not sure what actually counts as a hit. It must be checks that land the other guy on his ass, because they definitely don't count every hit to the body of an opposing player.

One Timers = One Time Shots. These are the shots that you take right off of the pass, w/out catching and controlling the puck. Player A passes the puck towards Player B, Player B hits a slap shot as the puck reaches him.

drbrosco

I started a franchise last night with the Caps. I am noticing the Caps are a one-man wrecking crew with Ovechkin.

But I played two games & my 2nd was against Toronto & wow! it was an absolute war to the final second. I lost 2-1 but i was so into it I was yelling at the TV....you know you got a good game when your talking to your tv, or maybe I am crazy :eyecrazy But I have never got into games like that playing Madden or any other sports games.

Hopefully I can lock down my 1st victory this morning.

One more thing...the announcers keep saying stuff like they don't understand why I have the players in that I have in....I have always let the computer change my players in/out...do you do it manually?

Haha!! I've said the same thing: NEVER got into Madden like i am into this game. I'm constantly yelling when i score, or swearing when the cpu scores on me!!! And its even worse when my buddy comes up and plays our co-op franchise, we're screaming and yelling together. (my girlfriend doesn't find it as exciting, however :o)

The announcers do say that shit. But they are really only saying that when you have your 3rd or 4th line out there against the cpu's 1st or 2nd line. If you listen carefully, they say the same thing when the cpu lines do the same against your 1st or 2nd lines -- so it goes both ways.

did i mention how much i love the commentary in this game?!?!?!? The other night i crushed a cpu player against the boards and injured him for the game (he was later determined to be out for a month), and when my player returned from penalty the announcers talked about my guy will not receive a welcome from these home fans for injuring one of theirs, blah, blah, blah... Well no shit, everytime my guy touched the puck, the whole crowd would let out loud "boos" that filled the whole stadium :D Now that is some cool shit, right there!!!

I might have to pick this up as well. I still have 09, it is one of my favorite all time games. I lost in the stanley cup finals with the Blackhawks but played the full 82 game schedule.

There just doesn't seem to be enough difference between 09 and 10 to justify the purchase. Maybe I'll wait until it goes on sale or get a buy 2 get one free deal.

I had lots of luck scoring by looping around the goal on offense and sliding a pass far post for a one timer. Just an FYI

Well Raiderfan I finally had to do something one way or another & quit flip-flopping from team to team so I went with PITT as my team & I have to play it on Rookie with the Goalie sliders turned down...I know, I am terrible at this game :o:o:o

BUT

that doesn't mean it's not a blast to play just because I really suck! After 4 games I am 3-1 beating the Rangers 7-4, Coyotes 5-2, & Flyers 2-1 & I lost to the Islanders 4-3 in an OT shootout. So at rookie level the games are pretty even for me as the only team I felt like I man handled was Pheonix & I think they really do suck.

That OT shootout is a real tuff one imo. I don't have a clue how to get the puck past that goalie. But I hate that camera angle it has it setup on where you are face2face with the goalie as I would be more comfortable the other way & the goalie looks bigger than the goal. And I don't even touch my goalie in the shootout, I lasted until the 8th shooter before they finally scored. I wished I had time I would practice SO's but I need to get games in as we are down to 14 days until I start my 8 hour days of playing MW2...lol...And I am not kidding.

How are you faring in your season? And don't you use the Blues?

Another stat question...What does +/- mean? I see that as a stat on my fantasy team also & I can't figure it out but if they keep track it must be important. Thanks & have a great day! :hithere:

raiderfan
10-27-2009, 07:58 AM
Yeah, I'm the Blues and I'm playing on Pro with a slider set I like. My record is
5-4-1, currently, and i love my two first team defensemen.

I, much like you, am anticipating MW2, and my playing time with NHL will decrease for sure, but I believe i will get a full season in. Hockey is a long season and this is the best sports game i've played this next gen.

+/- hey??? This question made me laugh because every week my buddy comes up (who has much more knowledge of hockey than i ever will) and i ask him the same question and he tells me, and for the life of me, I can never remember how he explains it!! I know he's told me at least 3 times. If mikeymo doesn't check this thread (cause he'd know) before my buddy comes up again, i'll give you the answer!!!

shooter2977
10-27-2009, 08:44 AM
The plus represents the number of goals your team scores while you are on the ice and minus is the number of goals you get scored against you while you are on the ice.

Thanks for the answer for the +/- question

Also there was an update for the game when I turned it on a couple minutes ago, I assume this is the one you was talking about raiderfan?

EDIT: I wanted to ask (sorry for all the ?'s) do you know if there is anyway to change the camera for Shoot out's? I went ahead & got about 10-15 minutes of shootout practice in last bight & I was able to change the camera angle, but I just turned the game on today & went thru everything & I didn't see anyway to change it for the season mode, maybe I overlooked it...seems like that would be an option cause as I stated earlier I hate the camera angle it has now.

Also between periods it gives you coaching advice wich I think I understand all but one & that is when it says "Get to the Dirty Areas". That one doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks for all the help you have been on this game as I really appreciate it very much!

raiderfan
10-30-2009, 05:40 AM
the camera angle for shootouts is fixed. I tried to change it as well, but won't allow me to. i kind of wish i could just sim shootouts, as it would at least give me a chance to win. when i hit ot, i know its just a matter of time before i lose, as i can't score in a shootout.

"Dirty Areas" hey? I've never noticed it saying that. Must be talking about just in front of the net where all the positioning takes place.

Yes the update took place. You may notice a different feel to the gameplay. I haven't been on in a couple of days, so i have yet to dl the patch, but will be on for quite a while tonight.

well, erased everything and started over, after the patch.

downloaded the new rosters and started a season with the NY Rangers. I'm

I am still using the Penguins on Rookie & am 12-2. I have only blown out 3 teams by beating them by 3 or 4 goals & never feeling threatened by them. But most of my games are going right down to the wire so I am not ready to move up to Pro yet. If I used Columbus I'd probably be about 5-10.

I also won an OT Shoot Out    I couldn't believe I made a goal, really I sit here for a minute in total disbelief.

Don't you think they should offer better Achievements in the game for the Season Mode than they do? It seems to me like most of the Achievements are for other stuff, mainly Online Verses Play. Sports games are the only games I really care about achievements.

I did get one last nite in an online game for "No Icing"...whoopee  ... But when I went to those lobbies last nite I could not believe that some of those guys had played that many games...One guy had an Online record of 276-58, unreal! I played a guy who had a 78-35 record & after he figured out I was a noob he played with me & won 7-2 as it could have been 15-0, but hey it was my 1st goals ever Online as I am 0-3 now.
One thing that bothered me was the game was soooo slow paced & It's not like that when I play season or played the other online games.

I also tried a game using one of those foriegn leagues with the crazy named teams & man the players really suck
