Question about backing up PS3

I'm in the mist of backing up a PS3, and it won't allow me to fully back up the System Info.. I have a Western 250gb Passport as an external Hd, and the PS3 is only a 80gb.. The backup gets to about 46% and then it says cant finish, does anyone have any insight why it won't finish??
Thanks in advance..

I've never heard of this problem. Is there multiple partitions on the external hard drive? Is it properly formatted to fat32?

Maybe hit the recovery menu on the ps3, try rebuilding the database and then try a backup.

good luck, i always have a hard time doing a full back up via a external HDD, i always have to try multiple times until out of no where it does it. I dont know what it is. for me it never even gets to %1.. it'll just stall at 0% and say 8hrs remaining (im like wtf 8hrs?!) then 30mins later its still at 0%, i then cancel it, restart the whole system and try again. I hear rumors that its a mounting issue.

try plugging in the external HDD and shutting down the PS3 while its still plugged in. then power up the PS3 again while the HDD is plugged in.

also as pinoy said make sure you have enough space on the 250gig, is it partitioned to maybe like 200g/50g and your trying to write to the 50g?

when it gets to 46% and says cant finish, whats the exact error message.

worst case scenario is you might have to do what i had to do more then once, plug the HDD to a PC and use a program to delete all partitions and then do a full reformat in FAT32.

also another thing i notice with my problems is using different usb cords.. i know how the fuck does that matter, but it matters!.. when i started having problems at first i then everything EVEN trying different USB cords and bingo it would work, i dont know if i was using a bad USB cord or if the cords i tried where old and not hi-speed compatible or something, i dont know. now i stick with using just 1 USB cord that i know works and its worked so far the past 2 times that i had to do a full backup. good luck

I have my External Seperated into two 120gb spaces.. The PS3 is only a 40gb, not an 80 like I stated before.. I tried again today and nothing.. I don't know.. Ill write down the error code next time..

If I were you I'd probably back up my games saves onto a separate USB stick (to be safe) and then delete some stuff to make the backup smaller and try again (delete stuff you won't miss I suppose or don't mind redownloading) It could be a bad sector on your external drive.

Have you guys seen those really neat new portable drives that Best Buy is selling. They are the size of 3.5" floppy drive MAYBE and hold 250 or 500gb of data.

That one. They had it on sale last week but I think I'm going to put one on my wish list. Would that work to back up the PS3? I like that it's pocket sized so I can take home work with me that won't fit on my 2gb flash chip on my key.

It's just a 2.5' laptop hard drive in an enclosure, but yes it will work. I have one like that that I made out of an old drive and that's what I use. If you have an old laptop hard drive (sata) you can just buy the enclose for around $10 and make your own too.

Just make sure to format the drive in fat32.

Maybe drop down into the dos prompt and run chkdsk on it to try and root out any bad sectors on the drive?

Thanks, I'll give it a try.. This is a friends PS3, not mine.. I jus told hime he may have to go out with the 5 games he has saved on the old PS3 hd. I told him he may to start over.. He looked at me like I was crazy.. lol So, I'll see what I can do..

Here's the Error code I get at 46%. 80010012

Seems thats code for corrupted game data. As I said before go in the save games folder and copy the game saves over to your USB device individually (a pita) If the games he has installed are on disk he'll have to reinstall them on the new one, but afterwards he can just copy his game saves from the usb device to his new ps3 and all should be well. Same with downloadable PSn games, he'll just have to re-download them.

Other thing to try is to delete the game install data in the game data folder and then try backing it up again (make sure you copy those game saves first separately though, don't want to lose them) and then try to do the backup after deleting some of the installed games.

I don't know how to help you. BUT my Aunt just called me and told me the 500gb Elite is on sale at Costco for 109 dollars and that Best Buy price matched it. Gonna try and get one tomorrow. She's in CA but prices should be the same.

/edit - I just looked everywhere I can't find it for the price she got, but she used my rewards card, wonder if I can get them to match based off of that alone. Or they'll suspend my card because I let my aunt use it. One of those.

Good to hear, and that's the darned thing about hard drives. They only do three things: Read, Write, and Fail
