Better way to setup?

I have a Philips DVD Surround system model HTS3565D which has :

Connector Type 1 x audio line-in ( mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm ) - front 1 x USB ( 4 pin USB Type A ) - front 1 x HDMI output ( 19 pin HDMI Type A ) - rear 1 x component video output ( RCA phono x 3 ) - rear 1 x S-Video output ( 4 pin mini-DIN ) - rear 1 x composite video output ( RCA phono ) - rear 1 x SPDIF input ( RCA phono ) - rear 2 x audio line-in ( RCA phono x 2 ) - rear

I also have a playstation 3 as my blu-ray player.

I have Directv HR21-200 DVR and 52 inch Sharp Aquos TV with 3 HDMI connections. Right now one HDMI on tv goes to Directv DVR, 1 goes to Playstation BLu-Ray and one goes to the Philips Home Theatre. I run the digital audio straight from the Directv box to the Philips receiver for digital sound for TV watching. Everything works fine except the Playstation does not have a way to get digital sound to the Philips Home Theatre. Right now the TV has RCA red and white outs going to Philips to give my analog sound for it. There has got to be a way to get digital sound to the Philips isn't there?

Well there is, but there is no simple solution here. With all your higher end HD gear like a 52'' Sharp HD TV, HD STB and PS3, you best soultion is to get a true home theater audio setup that will be able to accomidate all your devices and handle lossless True HD.. You can find a nice package for under $500 that would be a HUGE step up from the 1 you have now with only 1 digital audio input. Like this Onkyo setup for only $399..

As far as a cheap solution to your PS3 connection issues goes...

Since the PS3 is optical and the HTIB only has 1 digital coax, you will need a optical to coax converter like this 1 for around $12.. They work great. You will need to either switch out the 2 connections between the PS3 and HR21 when you use them or get a manual switch.

Here is a switch (you can just use the toslink portion) with remote.

Thanks for the advice. Should I be nervous about the Onkyo being refurbished?

Not at all... I and quite a few others have ordered from 4less and it is a great place to shop. Even though it is "factory" refurbished (from Onkyo BTW), it will come with everything as if it was new and also comes with a FULL 1 year warranty. A4less has a 30 day return policy on any defective device sold (even refurbs). For $399, that deal is hard to beat and is a HUGE upgrade.. Trust me on that 1.

Great advice Bigloww,,,not only will the OP be able to use all of the digital outputs on his equipment,,,they will most certainly notice an upgrade in sound quality as well. Next thing the OP has to look at is speakers.

Rite on Otis....:D

But the Onkyo 6100 includes a set of 7.1 speakers and sub. Not the best but very good for HTIB speakers (especially in that price range). They compliment the sudo 606 pretty well IMO. And a major improvement over the speakers he is using now.

For $399 it is a great way to get into lossless audio.
