Aggressive Broadcast Initiatives -- The NHL will institute aggressive new measures to bring fans closer to the game. Viewing fans will be brought "inside the glass" through such broadcast enhancements as HDTV telecasts, in-game interviews with head coaches, behind-the-scenes access to players and dressing rooms, additional camera positions, and players wearing microphones. Increased media access will give reporters covering NHL hockey the opportunity to enhance their coverage.

Along those lines...see below:

Tim Panaccio of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported today that there is the possibility that Comcast will broadcast the NHL on a national level for the upcoming 2005-2006 year. Comcast owns the Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers and broadcasts Flyers, Sixers and Phllies games in HDTV in the Philadelphia market. ...

NHL.COM has an article saying that Comcast (Outdoor Life Network) has the rights to NHL broadcasts this year and for years to come.
Since I am a Dish Network Customer, I'll watch Hockey on OLN, but what are our chances of getting DN to grab their HD signal?

If there was enough interest in NHL ESPN would still be broadcasting it. The strike has hurt them for years to come.

First of all, it wasn't a STRIKE, it was an Owners Lock Out!
And yes it has hurt the sport of Pro Hockey. But I think OLN will get those fans back along with creating NEW fans.
Hockey is a LIVE sport, it is 100 times better LIVE then on TV, it just doesn't translate to TV well, I agree. But with MORE broadcasts and HD programming along with Referee's and players wearing microphones, I would say that Hockey will be able to recover sooner then later.
It just needs a chance to prove it's self.

I DISAGREE. hAVING BEEN A PARTIAL SEASON TICKET HOLDER FOR SEVERAL YEARS WITH THE SHARKS, I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF IN THE STADIUM GAMES. I ALSO SAW ON VOOM CHANNELS HOW GREAT HD BROADCAST OF ICE HOCKEY CAN BE AS WELL. THEY ARE BOTH TWO GREAT EXPERIENES.

IF A REASONABLE PRICE HAD TO BE PAID AS A PREMIUM OFFERING I WOULD PAY IT.

MAYBE IT IS BECAUSE I HAVE A LARGE SCREEN SYSTEM BUT I FELT IT TRANSLATES TO HD & BIG SCREEN VERY WELL.

As an ex-hockey player, I have always felt that hockey translates well onto a TV screen (especially a big screen). however, I can see how those that have not played the game would have a more difficult time following the play, because they have not developed the ability to anticipate the play and instinctively follow the puck.

However, with HD, the detail helps to follow the puck and the play. Unfortunately, I doubt that Dish will pick up an OLC HD feed (if there is such a thing). I wish ESPN would have gone after hockey again. Oh well, they've still got poker...and billiards...and...

Oh, I know Hockey. In fact I am a Goal Judge for the USHL Team here.
I can follow the puck just fine. I just hear so many people say that they can't watch hockey on TV because they can't "Feel" the speed or "FEEL" the hit's or see what happens on the ice "BEHIND THE PLAY" Like those of us who see LIVE games can.
I said above that HD Broadcasts WILL help the sport of Hockey in many ways, one being to do just what it isn't now. "TRANSLATE to TV"

Now that we know you are all cool hockey guys... may I suggest that we get back to the discussion ;-)...

Has anyone heard of the possibilty of picking up OLN-HD or even Comcast HD.... Maybe even Season Ticket broadcasting 1 HD Hockey Event in (like NBA had this past season).

Anyword?

I emailed OLN to ask if they were going to broadcast in HD, they said YES, but they didn't say if they were going to be on Dish Network in HD.

Check Dish's promo for CI on their site -- it says there will be "selected" games in HD. If only I could believe that Dish would carry them in HD...

Also, I have also heard that OLN will have games in HD -- again, will Dish carry that channel in HD?

And, again, I have heard that HD Net will carry some games...

I was looking into getting Dish Network but when I saw I had to buy the 180 channell package to get OLN I pretty much scrubbed the idea. Last year I got the Sports package with TW and watched a TON of collage hockey. I'm wondering if the all the fox channells on the sports veriety package with DN will be with the Fox Collage Sports net. Anyone know? I think If i can see local NHL coverage through fox (I'm my holding my breath for HD), having OLN might not matter too much.

Still no word on NHL in HD on OLN? (Did that make sence?) awefull lot of initials....
I am getting the Fox Sports package for all of the College Hockey and some of the NHL games, even though they won't be in HD, I need my HOCKEY FIX.
Altitude Network carries all of the Colorado Avalanche games and MSG carries the Ranger Games.

Well, good luck with blackouts on the out of market games. You might be better served with the NHL Ticket.

This looks like a HUDGE LETDOWN !!!! Dish N just listed the first 10 day schedual for NHL.......only 1 game will be broadcasted in HD !!!!! what a big let down. I pray that they change this right quick.........

After having the Center Ice package the last played season...I was bummed at the quality of some of the broadcasts.....I'm now debating weither I will spring for the $130 package now.

Anyone else have any inside info on this HD Center Ice deal?

BLACKOUTS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to watch my home team on HD.....what is the sense of having HD if I have to move out of state to watch my home team. 90% of the Redwings games are broadcasted by Fox Sports. The broadcasts suck big time. The only time the picture is good...(still not HD quality) is when they are not using the cameras mounted in the high seats. Sure the mobile cams giving interviews are fair....but who cares! Man am i ticked off again for this season.

The only time I will be able to see my home team in HD is if ESPN or a local OTA station broadcasts.

Also, the broadcasts comming from OLN are just as minimal as Fox Sports.

Someone shoot me please.....argggggggggggggggggggggg!

Please excuse me for my negativity....I am just so bummed at the fact that HD technology has been around for a while now....yet is barely used. Is this because of the fact that it costs alot to arm all the different broadcasters with HD cams....and the ability to send them down the pipe to our TV's???

I thought that if Fox Sports Net was broadcasting the game, then the HDNET broadcast of the same game wouldn't be blacked out. All of the info I've been able to find stated that regional sports networks wouldn't cause the HDNET games to be blacked out. If the Wings game is blacked out tonight I will be very pissed.

Suomi,

I'm looking at the dish onscreen guide. The HDNET shows a black crossed out circle on the channel selected screen for the 8pm game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTH.

I better put all heavy objects away from my reach at game time!

Wow, talk about retarded. Why bother putting the games in HD if the home market will be blacked out. Seriously, WTF. Furthermore, this contradicts everything I've read regarding blackouts. It specifically said that regional sports networks don't affect blackouts. Is Fox Sports Net Detroit not a regional sports network? Man this bothers me.

I just sent this email to Fox Sports Net.
(feedback@foxsports.com) send in your opinions now!!!

Please stop broadcasting all Detroit Redwings Games!!!!!!!!! Your broadcast quality is so poor we cant even see the numbers on the jerseys...or follow the puck. It looks like your cameras in the arena are that of the 1950's quality or less....say a resolution of 120x74 !!!

Please let professionals broadcast the games so we can see decent HD and SD resolutions. Your causing the blackouts on several other broacast networks. What is the sense of this if it makes the viewing for locals in MI. to watch a decent broadcast, IMPOSSIBLE? We Redwings fans have had enough of this low quality broacast !!! At least buy new cameras and infrastructure to give us the ability to see jersey #'s and see the puck.....I have a 32 inch tv....a 52 inch HDTV and your broadcasts are pittiful. !!!!! to say the least.

Sorry to be so negative about this...but it really is pretty sad when the HD and Center Ice broadcasts are blacked out for such low quality broadcasts of our home team. This is not what we fans deserve!!!!
Thank you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This situation is absolutely hiddious and makes me want to give up on HD all togather. What is the sense when OTA's have more HD broadcasts than that on DN ?

STOP BLACKOUT NOW!

My locals on DN look horrible with sports, and my antenna coverage is spotty (never thought I'd be back to the days of holding the antenna to get a decent signal, but the local HDs are another topic altogether.)

It will be interesting to see if you get a response from Fox. What I hate is the humongus graphics they think fans want to see plastered all over the ice. Like I care about The best Damned Sports Show. Especially with the puck moving on the ice!!!!!!!!!!

Regarding the cost of cameras, this should answer it for you:

http://bssc.sel.sony.com/BroadcastandBusiness/DisplayModel?m=0&p=2&sp=19&id=80710

For those not wanting to look at the link, Sony lists the camera for 100k. Considering the fact you probably have 4-6 cameras for a game, not including the equipment in the truck, you are looking at a very large investment.... even if they don't pay list.
