Onkyo HT-S6100 problem with XBOX

If this is not the right place to ask this question, I apologize.
The question I have deals with XBOX 360 being connected to HT-S6100 system.
Here is what happened.
Once I set up the whole system, I started checking all the components I connected to it to make sure everything worked right and it did, except for the XBOX.
I connected the XBOX to the receiver using XBOX component cables to component input on the receiver along with audio cables.
The end result was no picture, all I was getting were these weird gray and white lines going vertically on the screen. After staring dumbfoundly at the screen, I decided to try switching the xbox to standard def setting. (there is a switch on the AV connector on the XBOX side). Sure enough picture appears and the sound and everything works fine. I switch it back to HDTV setting and nothing again.
I used to have the XBOX connected directly to my TV (Samsung DLP) over component with XBOX set to 1080P with no problems whatsoever.
Next thing I tried was resetting XBOX to factory video settings, which resets it to output in 1080i. Video came on, but no audio. Now, I understand that the receiver in HT-S6100 system doesn't do 1080p over component, but shouldn't it just passthru? My TV doesn't do 1080p over component either, but it worked fine with the XBOX which was outputting in 1080p.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what to do here? I know I could just connect the XBOX directly to TV and bypass the receiver, but I was really hopping to have everything work thru the receiver.
I would appreciate everyone's input.
Thank you very much.

I don't have all the answers here but I can tell you that I encountered the same problem. I just send the Xbox straight to my TV, but my TV accepts 1080p via component. But doesn't the 6100 convert 1080i to 1080p?

For sound I use and optical cable from the xbox to the reciever. I HIGHLY recommend that you do that. It sounds much much better that analog and you get a much better surround effect.

Eyeone, do you have the 6100 as well? 6100 only does 1080i over component from what I read, but my TV only does 1080i over component as well and XBOX was never an issue.
This is just strange.

Yes I have the 6100 as well (see my sig). I ran into the exact same issue. I don't know why it won't do 1080p for component. Though, it might have something to do with AACS I believe. For example, I have my Xbox connected via component set at 1080p. But when I play HD-DVDs it only does 1080i. As I understand it component cables aren't certified to carry 1080p video (legally, that is. technically it can do it). So perhaps that is the reason the receiver doesn't support it.

Are you going from the Reciever to your tv via HDMI or components?

I have a 6100 and a xbox 360 and it all works fine, but then again I am going HDMI from the xbox to the reciever and hdmi from the reciever to the TV.

This may be no help but if you have an xbox that has an HDMI then I would scrap the rest of it and go with that.

Icudogg,

I do have HDMI going from receiver to TV. XBOX is connected to receiver via component, because I have an older XBOX, before MS added HDMI output. So I don't have a choice with that unless I get that HDMI conversion kit, but from everything I've read it really sucks.

If it were me I would just send the component to the receiver and set the Xbox to 1080i. If your TV doesn't do 1080p on component anyway then it equals out (suppose the receiver doesn't convert) and you save a set when you turn everything on.

FYI if his TV is a 1080p TV, it will always display 1080p no matter the input resolution. The TV will upconvert/upscale and deinterlace (if necessary) any signal sent to it and in turn display that in it's native resolution 1920x1080 for 1080p.

I'm just going by what he said about his TV not doing 1080p on component. I understand that 1080p TVs display 1080p.
