Important question for the DVR

I'm switching to Dish network, on the HD DVR, if I use my off air antenna not the satellite dish, but the off air antenna to receive my local CBS, ABC NBC channels, can I use the feature that will record the show, say like CSI Miami, every time it comes on, by me just programming it once to do that, or can I only do that with channels that come in from the satellite dish.
Directv calls this season pass, where it automatically records you're favorites when your not home.
Directv's DVR does this with channels that come in through the off air antenna, can the Dish Networks DVR do the same?

I have tivo and it wont let me do it. Tivo gets the guide from Dish which doesn't include Off air channels. That's funny though cause I was thinking about that a week ago and would rather have tivo record from the Digital locals instead. I can do it when I'm there but not away. Opps, Just re-read you post and I dont know about Dish's DVR's.

You are using a Tivo with Dish? How is that working out? I ran into a website the other day with codes, etc. to get the remote to work both units. Is it possible to record HD with a Tivo connected to a Dish system?

Yes you can record digital OTA stations (SD/HD) by setting up a manual timer event using the 921 or 942 receiver. You can view analog stations but not record them (only digital stations). You're not likely to get guide info for any local OTA channel so you need to know when that program airs. You may view another satellite channel or pre-recorded program while your local digital channel is recording.

I was thinking of going that route until the mpeg4 pvrs come out, considering I could get one for even less than the lease deposit for a 942. I have an 811 which should not pose a problem. Thanks!

I've got the 942, and am getting 19 local OTA channels, along with guide info for all my OTA channels here in the midwest, no problem.
I have gotten my 942 to record my local OTA channel regularly.
I can do a search for my program, and select the show from my OTA HD channel, select any of the other options, i.e. all programs, or only new programs, etc., and it records the episodes from my local OTA channel.
If you are not getting guide info for your OTA channel, the OTA channel will not show up when you search for a program.

The MPEG4 receivers will have no affect on the OTA digitals because they will always remain in MPEG2. It will only affect satellite HD (and in the future SD) channels and most likely the new channels that arise. If DN decides to convert existing sat channels to MPEG4 then they would bare the entire burden for replacement cost else risk loosing many upset customers. I believe the cost of the MPEG4 decoder chip is around $35 in large quantities therefore I imagine the cost of the new receivers would be comparable to the existing units but that's just speculation. These new receivers may be five months to a year away. As far as existing HD customers are concerned "replacements will be as painless as possible", said Charlie Ergen (former CEO of Dishnetwork).
