Need advice on 2 competing Center Channel spks. Mondurant Sort and Kef ICQ2. Both sell around $130-150. Is one significantly better than the other? (It is intended to replace a home brew spk with Tang Band drivers)
Thanks.

If your center speaker doesn't match your right and left speakers in timber and tonality, you will have sound problems particularly with dialog and other things as well.

I think you meant Mordaunt Short?

Both speakers are good quality but completely different characteristics.

If you're just experimenting to get a surround sound up going do some research to see if you can find what materials your TangBang drivers are made of and at least try to match the materials.
i.e. titanium tweeters and paper woofers

If you spend extra money on a good speaker it may be going to waste. When it doesn't match you will lose the engineered quality of the speaker. I would try to match it and look for something used on craigslist.

Ok, I definitely agree, but am I still better off with a better center channel speaker even if they are not precisley "matched" with the existing fronts?

I'm sure that you'll find differing opinions on this, depending on who you ask. There are those who say that your center channel MUST be of the same manufacturer. And there are those who say that any brand is OK as long as it matches the materials and timbre of your other speakers. I agree with Loves2Watch and Soupnazi. As long as the center speaker matches your others in timbre and tonality, there shouldn't be a problem. You may also want to check out eBay for a center channel speaker. There are some fantastic buys on new and used speakers there. :2cents
