I have been using this player quite a lot over the months I have owned it for Blu-ray and YouTube but never for DVD or CD, I have better players for that purpose. I read about issues with DVD playback at AVSForum and thought I better check it. I did and it doesn't work for DVD. Apparently many or all units of this model made between September 2008 and November 2008 have a defective drive. I called LG and got a case number and will receive a return shipping label soon. They did require a sales receipt which I managed to find. I have owned the player 5 months or so. I consider it excellent for Blu-ray, very fast loading and performance is first rate in my opinion. Now if LG can fix DVD and CD playback without messing up Blu-ray playback, I will be happy.
Anybody using this player should check manufacturing date as I suspect a majority of the players were manufactured during the period in question.

Thanks Chris!
Please let us know how they fix it, and how long it takes. Isn't it amazing that they made all these players and no one noticed at LG that they didn't play SD DVDs or CDs?
This is why I do not trust LG for many things.

I don't know if the defective drives just lasted a while and then would no longer play DVD acceptably or if they were just bad immediately. I don't recall having owned anything from LG other than DVD and Blu-ray players and have been happy up to this point with those players. The LG BH200 which I use a lot for HD DVD and DVD has worked fine but based on what I have read is in need of a firmware update which is being worked on. I will see how the company does with the issues needing attention.

Has anyone ever built something at home and not even check to see if it works when you are done? I mean come-on it's like they got the heads up their A$$e$! Just because something is designed to work with DVDs doesn't mean that they will, how embarrassing for a company!

I received the player back today and have played an AVCHD disc on DVD-R media and a commercial DVD. The player appears to be fixed but I can't tell what was done other than part replaced. I assume the drive was replaced. Outstanding service in my opinion and fast.

Great. How long did it take?

Only 8 days including shipping both ways and shipping both ways was paid for by LG. I must say I am impressed.

That is amazing! At least we knew the first Blue Ray players were not designed to play CDs, and that seemed pretty ridiculous at the time.
8 days and free shipping both ways IS impressive IMO. Maybe i will consider an LG BD player at some point when in the market for one based on this. I never liked their SD DVD players though, as they tended to have a green push to them.
