Lee Stewart 09-25-2009, 04:27 PM PS3 3.0 / 3.01 firmware update making Blu-ray drive unusable?
What could possibly cause nearly 700 comments on an official Sony blog post announcing the relatively minor 3.01 firmware update for the PS3? Plaudits? A Kanye meme gone awry? No, it's the age old problem of an update that apparently breaks more than it fixes. In this case, a sizable number of users are reporting that the 3.0 and/or 3.01 update caused their PS3's Blu-ray drive to be all but unusable for both games and Blu-ray movies (although some folks report that DVDs still work). Other users are also reporting intermittent problems like no sound, and some problems with specific games, but it does seem like the complaints are pretty widespread and, as of yet, Sony isn't saying much about them. Bitten by the upgrade bug yourself? Let us know in comments.

Thanks for this link. I have not updated from 3.0 yet and now I will wait for the next update that fixes this issue.
rubystone1111 09-25-2009, 08:08 PM I did both updates and had no problems with it. I have the 80g.

HD Goofnut 09-25-2009, 10:23 PM I have the 40 GB PS3 and have it at 3.00 and have had no issues as of yet. I will hold off for something better than 3.01 though.
WestC07 09-26-2009, 04:00 PM 3.01 Slim with no probs.
mckenna797 09-26-2009, 10:29 PM I have the 80GB model CECHL01 and no problems with 3.0 or 3.1
Anyone hear of issues with the launch 60GB model?

Who here even has the 60GB model? I only reason someone would have it would be for its PS2 capabilities.

Or they bought it for BD playback when that was the best thing for BD playback. ;)
That is why I own a 60GB model because it had the WiFi that the 20GB launch model did not have. Remember i bought my PS3 in the launch month 11/2006, so why would I get rid of it for a less complete model? :D

Very true. It didn't matter to me as I never had a PS2. I was a Nintendo 64 owner during that time instead.
It is actually working out well that mine has the PS2 compatibility because when my oldest son left for college he left the PS3 but took the PS2 for DVD playback & to play PS2 games in his room. He knew others in the dorm would have plenty of PS3s to play on.
So now my 8 year old can still play the PS2 games he has on the PS3.

I have the launch 60, and have had no issues. But I haven't played a movie on it since updating.

Please report back when you do play a BD move so I know if it is safe to update mine.
Thanks!
RelfF2 09-28-2009, 07:11 PM backward compatible 80g model with no problems.
Chris Gerhard 09-29-2009, 10:03 AM I have a backward compatible 80GB and a 40GB and will wait for a determination of what is going on. That may be too many complaints to be completely without basis or be a coincidence. I will say all updates over the couple of years I have had a PS3 have been fine despite reading of a few complaints at times.

Halo360Fan 09-29-2009, 02:41 PM man I'm staying far away from 3.01 so many problems lol
rubystone1111 09-29-2009, 04:15 PM I don't know why some people get paranoid about the updates. I never had a problem with any of the updates for the ps3 or even my stand alone player. in fact for the most part.. they made some improvements.

Thing is, 3.01 fixed some of the 3.00 problems for many users.

Because some people had problems when they did the update. ;)
If you never had a problem then it would be hard to understand why some are nervous about doing them, but once you do get a problem you change your POV about them.
Luckily I have not had a problem myself.
Semp1 09-29-2009, 06:40 PM have a slim and a 60gb both with 3.01 both with no issues this sounds like bull to me.
So you have an original launch PS3 and you have no issues at 3.01?
That is good to know, but I doubt it is bull.
Thanks!
myturn 10-11-2009, 08:28 AM Weird that in this forum there are not many people saying they have had a problem with their last update or after it, but in other forums there are several folks saying their PS3 either froze up or just quit working and Sony wanting $150.00 to fix the problem. Now I don't own a PS3 so I am just thinking out loud here but so soon after the "Slim" model comes to market the older machines take a dive shortly after an upgrade?
Yet around this board it appears to be a non issue.
Very strange.

One thing we must consider is how the update was accomplished...over the Internet, from a USB connection, from a disc? There are warnings all over the place that if you turn off your power or anything disturbs the download that you will be in deep trouble. Did all the people who say they have had problems observe this warning?
I bought a new slim and it was several days before I could get an Ethernet hub to get that connection going. I waiting until then to check updates because my guess is that Internet updates are the most reliable. I downloaded 3.1 and have had no problems with the player at all.

rattmobbins 10-11-2009, 06:20 PM Just bought a slim last night and think I'll hold off on updating until Sony figures this thing out.
HD Goofnut 10-11-2009, 06:31 PM I have 3.00 with a 40 GB PS3 and have played several BDs with no problems whatsoever. I will wait for something better than 3.01 before I update again though.
House72 10-11-2009, 08:08 PM I have a 60gb, and a Slim.. I updated the slim last week to 3.01, and I haven't had a problem with it(Watched blu-rays and played games on it).. I did hold off on the 60gb, just for the fact it's out of warranty and I don't want to take the chance with it.. Don't feel like sending sony 150 bucks to fix it..
marcallo 10-12-2009, 11:31 PM I've got a slim and 3.1 and no problems. Been playing Saints Row 2 quite happily for over a week now. Bluray movie played fine the other night as well.
Thomas Foolery 10-13-2009, 01:40 AM I have a 60gig Ps3 which has never given me a problem from an update. It seems like this update nonsense comes up pretty regular.
