Speaker Terminals Short Circuited, Receiver LED Flashing

Boy do I ever feel like a idiot, I thought I turned it off!! :mad:

I was plugging in a coax digital cable in on the back of my receiver and by mistake pulled the "Red" speaker wire out on the front right speaker, then tried to plug it back in and there was a "loud spark noise" and the receiver shut off abruptly with the power LED blinking rapidly! After unplugging it from the wall for over a hour I turned it back on where the LED blinks until it go's solid to indicate its fully on, once the LED go's solid I should hear sound coming from my speakers. It simply shuts itself off when the LED go's solid and begins blinking rapidly! I don't understand, I didn't touch the red wire to the black one, I just put it back into where it came out from.

Both fuses are fine, did an ohms test on both

When I went to put the metal covering back on I noticed three small black soot stains above the amp section, there's these circuit boards right on top of the amp section. Hope it's not serious or expensive, I would hate to buy a new AV receiver now when I don't really need one just yet!

Hope you can get that resolved with little or no cost but I doubt it.

I now believe those brown marks are hot spots, whenever I would place my hand on top it felt hot where those marks are when operating normally. The amp section is right there where you see those dusty hot spots. I did learn my lesson this time, it will never happen again!! I'm taking it to a Denon repair facility in October, $50 bucks to diagnosis. I figure if I have to buy a new AV receiver it will cost me $1500-$2000 because I drive a 4 ohms speaker system, if it weren't for that I could settle for a mid end unit.

These days, most of the mid range products handle a 4 Ohm load quite well so I believe the4 cost of replacement will be 1/2 or less than what you predicted.

It is very important that if I need to replace my Denon unit I want "high quality sound" equal to or better than my AVR-5700 THX Ultra Certified receiver! What current Denon model is on par with my AVR-5700 sound quality and what would you consider mid-end?

me has an old aiwa out in the garage we could let you test drive for a week or so. If you f**k it up like you did with your Denon,,,well,,,,we'll let pappylap bitchslap you before you are allowed to spend more than $500 bucks on a receiver!!:D:D:D:D

I would compare Denon and Marantz side by side as pretty much equals (although I prefer the Marantz but not for any technical reason). If you heard one you would fall in love. The 800 series and above in the Onkyo line are quite nice as well.

If I or any other audio professional/engineer had to choose between Denon and Marantz (both owned by D & M Holdings) it would be a very difficult decision because they are both excellent brands, true performers and are a cut above.

I do love the Marantz brushed aluminum faceplate with the touch of golden decals, it really gives it a sexy high end look!

It seems I missed this post, anyway my Denon's temperature sensitive fan rarely ever came on. When I would watch a movie at very very high listening levels where the action was non stop my fan would come on, then when the action would quiet down I heard my fan running. I would usually hear it turn off almost right away. I have heard a lot of complaints (over at AVS forum) about Denon receivers with HDMI inputs that have a problem with video and audio freeze ups, seen it demonstrated on YouTube, what is your take on the complaints?

I have not found that to be a problem with Marantz or Denon.

It's going to cost me $279.99 to fix my Denon AVR-5700 receiver, I plan on keeping it a few more years. There were a few burned out diodes, capacitors and transistors in the amp section that got fried! I still don't know if my front right speaker got fried! The company that I took it to asked how old it was when I took it out of the original box, I asked why. They said it looks brand new, I laughed! He told me his wife set a plant on top of his speakers leeving a ring on his beautiful speakers. It could have been much worse, I have learned my lesson! Never mess with anything while it's turned on!

I just hope this thread makes others think twice when checking connections while things are still turned on even though I wasn't plugging in speaker connections!
