On the heels of Swayze's death we decided to rent Ghost. For some reason I own the LaserDisc but not the DVD. So this was an opportunity to see if a 19 year old holds up in this age of High Definition. Suffice to say it does.
The Movie (Paramount, 128 mins, Rated PG-13)
I can't remember the last time saw this, and although familiar with the movie and knowing what was coming I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I honestly forgot how good this movie is. The cast was perfect and the very smart (Oscar nominated) script never lets you down.
We all remember of course that Whoopie wins an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. And seeing both Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze (even Tony Goldwyn) excellent performances got me thinking if they were even nominated. They were not. Of course this was the year of Dances with Wolves, Goodfellas, Pretty Woman, Misery, The Godfather III (to name a few). So the actors and the movie (which was nominated) didn't stand a chance.
The Transfer (1.85:1, 1080p/AVC MPEG-4)
Much to my surprise this was a very good transfer. Haven't ever seen the DVD, this has to be an upgrade in my opinion. Very clean 16x9 presentation rarely shows any grain. The colors were spot on and the details very clear.
The Soundtrack (Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround)
Dialogue had to pumped up a little bit (as most movies do), surrounds were present when they needed to be. Overall a very good audio experience.
The Extras
Only watched "100 Years... 100 Passions". A 19 minute excerpt talking about AFI's favorite love stories. Got me interested in seeing a couple of titles. In particular "Roman Holiday" (with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck) and "Sabrina" (also with Hepburn).
The Conclusion
Definitely worth a rental if you do not have the DVD. In Hindsight I probably should have bought it. High praise indeed.
