Ok, I have been out of the loop for a few years and need to ask sort of a dumb question. I have time warner cable and need some type of recorder to record of the tv onto a device or directly onto dvd's. My 2 tuner dvr can record but we are always filling it up and having to delete stuff. Is there a dvr type of recorder that can be purchased say at a retailer to record on a hard drive or onto a disc in hi def? thanks, gary

The Hauppauge HD PVR (model 1212) will record from your cable box to a hard drive in a PC. It will record in HD.

Is there one with a HD tuner and without a service contract? If so, what?

I am no expert but I found out that there are many cheap PC Cards that will turn your computer into a high definition recorder. See http://www.hdtvtunerinfo.com/ . I suspect that you may even be able to record to Blu-Ray Disk by adding a burner for less than $200.
I have been told that potential manufacturers of HD recorders are reluctant to make them for political reasons involving content owners who don't want them manufactured.
