I know a friend that is selling me the Samsung Model SIR-TS160 High Definition Receiver for $30. It is unsubscribed but it is able to receive digital and high definition channels without a subscription. Any one have an opinion whether it's a good $30 investment?

Well, it's an older generation tuner, but, unlike the current crop of digital standard definition converters, it IS High Definition. As long as you are willing to install a good antenna, you are probably getting a good deal.
The SIR-TS160 doesn't support HDMI connection, so be sure that you have enough component connections on your TV to support another connection.

This tuner has a DVI port so adding a DVI to HDMI cable or converter would get a true digital HiDef signal to the TV - but you would need to run either optical cable or RCA audio cables for sound.
I had the Samsung tuner without the DirectTV part back when they were first released and it worked good for me.
