You basically will need a HDMI cable for each device and then 1 from the receiver to the TV. So sounds like 3. If you are going to use the splitter, you will need 1 splitter and 2 additional HDMI cables per device. So if you want to connect both the PS3 and cable box to a splitter first, you will need a total of 7. You may want to verify if your Elite receiver has an audio passthrough capability like mine does. But my recevier has to be on for it to work.

Why run HDMI from the DVR through the receiver at all? There's no audio advantage to using HDMI for a broadcast source, which is limited to DD 5.1. I'd connect the set top box to the TV using HDMI and run a separate optical or coax audio connection to your receiver. You'd need three HDMI cables, one optical or coax cable, and no HDMI splitter.
