Lechhh 09-15-2009, 06:36 AM I need help in choosing a blu-ray player. I have KDL40ve5 LCD
I am trying to decide between following:
Ps3 slim: $300
Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc Player: $200 at bestbuy
I am a PC gamer so I don’t really care about console gaming but it would be ok to have it, I just can’t decide….:what:
Also bestbuy is selling this for $114 BD-P1600 Blu-ray Disc Player (open box item, a lot of them):2cents
Thanks for help! :banana::banana:
Welcome to the forum! :hithere:
There is a reason that BB has a lot of open box Samsung BD players. ;)
I have the original launch PS3 and I really like it except it doesn't have a infrared receiver for universal remotes. You have to buy a USB dongle called Blu-wave for about $15.00 but it doesn't turn the PS3 on or off (without going through menus to turn it off, but nothing to turn it on). Other than that and the increased heat/power/fan noise (much is corrected with the slim model) compared to a stand alone player and the IR deficiency.
Hope this helps!
greatmazinga 09-15-2009, 11:10 AM You'd be silly to NOT get the new PS3 slim. Bluray and media streaming abilities alone justify the price, add in the gaming and its a no-brainer. FPS games are better on a PC setup with mouse and keyboard controls but racing games and 2 player co-op games (like Lego Indiana Jones) are killer on a big HDTV. I don't care about universal remotes, I think the bluetooth remote is cool.
Hard to beat the PS3 when you factor in everything it can do. Much of the stuff the PS3 can do is overlooked because most people just never had the capability and don't see the goodness.

I believe would be better off to use a Blu-ray calibration disc but I have no idea if a CD calibration disc can be downloaded. I use DVE, a commercial calibration disc that is a little cumbersome to use but can ultimately result in a better image.

I have the DVE, but my new Oppo came with the new Spears & Munsil calibration disc which is far superior. It's simple and concise but far more complete in its testing and setup. A caveat: it will show your system's warts! I can't imagine anything of this caliber being downloadable.
Amazon, for one, carries this disc.
whiteE92 09-17-2009, 06:03 PM damn that is a good deal for that blu-ray player!

I have the Spears & Munsil calibration disc as well but haven't used it much yet. I will take the time sometime soon to see if I come up with something a little different than I got with DVE.

I would be interested in hearing if you change anything Chris.
Also depending on how long since the last time you used the DVE disc that, the display might have aged some so to accurately see what changes you end up making if any, you should check the settings with the DVE disc first.

And what about the upscalling and other Blu-Ray Player or DVD Player features, is playstation3 as good as BDP-S360 is in those ones? Is there any way to compare the two options?
Thanks.
