Poor signal on local HD channels through Dish Network

I live in Rochester, NY. I have a ViP722 DVR-HD receiver with two dish units on the roof and an antenna mounted on the standard dish all supplied by Dish Network. My question is how can I get improved performance for the scanned local HD channels that come in through the antenna. Dish does not have local channels in HD yet, so they have to come from the local broadcasters, though the air. They are weak and cutout a lot, especially at night. In the old days, before HD, we had to turn off the receiver to view the local channels and at that time they came in very clear. Can anyone help with this problem?
Thanks,
Richard

Welcome to the forums! I suggest you post your questions in a different forum for OTA reception: http://www.highdefforum.com/local-hdtv-info-reception-9/

In your post, please tell them which antenna you are using. Also, please go to www.tvfool.com and enter your actual street address. Include the link to your tvfool report in your post. Tvfool is invaluable for understanding local reception challenges and opportunities. Based on what you've stated, I would guess that you need a higher gain antenna and perhaps a pre-amp. The tvfool results will provide the necessary info to make an informed antenna plus pre-amp (if needed) recommendation.

You probably need a bit of an antenna tune up or upgrade.

As IDRick said post this in the OTA forum and you'll probably get more answers than you can sift through.

If you have a 722 it is likely a 722K with an OTA module, or you could not get locals via an OTA antenna.

Gain drops some with this module compared with the older receiver like the 622, because the signal is split in the receiver to allow an additional OTA recording source.

This tends to sap some signal strength, and all the more reason to have a strong signal from your OTA antenna.
