TKubik 09-06-2009, 08:02 PM Hi guys! I'm new to the forum. I recently entered the 21st century with my purchase of an LG 42lh40 and LG bd270. I'm having some issues that are bugging me though and I was hoping you guys could help out.
#1- I'm getting what I've heard described as "juddering" on all inputs (I haven't noticed it on the xbox yet, which is on component). I do get it on blue ray and on the satellite receiver, which are connected via hdmi. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, I'll try to explain. It usually happens on slower moving pictures and seems more often from right to left. It's when a normally smooth panning scene starts to jump a 1/4 inch at a time for a second. It's sometimes so bad that it makes me cringe and wonder why I just spent $1000 on this TV.
#2- I just watched my first blu ray and I have the same problems along with another problem. I got this pixel cloud around objects when there is movement in both the foreground and background, mainly.
Thanks for your help guys!
Tom
TKubik 09-06-2009, 08:03 PM I'm going to try to take some photos to illustrate.
TKubik 09-06-2009, 08:08 PM I tried to get a photo of it, but it's pretty hard. Here's the best I could get:

As you can see in the 100% crop, around his shoulder near the bottom of the pillar it gets very distorted. While watching it, there was a pixel cloud floating around him as he walked through the scene. Sorry, that's the best way I could describe it. What is this and how can I fix it? It's driving me crazy that I spent this much money and the quality is sub par.
DoctorCAD 09-06-2009, 08:54 PM Did you calibrate?
YeJiDady 09-07-2009, 05:19 AM I think this blur image called ghost.
You might want to set your TV up on 60Hz...something.
TKubik 09-07-2009, 06:14 AM Did you calibrate?
I only did the initial setup for the tv when I got it. I don't think I calibrated it. How do I do that?

No, it's not ghosting, it's something different. Thanks though.

Turn your sharpness down to 0, and snuff the edge enhancer.

Agreed, and turn off the Real Cinema also, maybe the tru motion as well. All those things do is degrade the picture and ADD artifacts.
Lee Stewart 09-11-2009, 08:21 PM Got any of the Star Wars films on DVD?
If so go to the menu then go to options and in the lower left hand corner is the THX logo - click on that which brings you to the THX Optomizer program that has test patterns and tutorials for setting Contrast (yours is too high) [white level] and Brightness [black level]
Doesn't take long to do. When you set the Contrast too high - the whites "bloom" which isn't good for picture quality.
Techlord 09-11-2009, 08:41 PM Your Sharpness and Contrast is the problem here, Sharpness adds an artificial edge to every character and object on screen. Contrast will balloon your whites making the picture grainy looking. If you really want your set to look good I recommend a calibration disc that walks you through all of the adjustments, it's worth it. Link provided for calibration disc if your interested. :)

What does everyone use for the blue filter with these?
Lee Stewart 09-12-2009, 12:44 AM What does everyone use for the blue filter with these?
You don't have to use a blue filter to correctly set the saturation level of color. There are other ways to do that. Don't even need test patterns.
Techlord 09-12-2009, 12:54 AM What does everyone use for the blue filter with these?
My blue filter came with my calibration disc, mine has two blue filters. Its make 2x and 3x.
TKubik 09-12-2009, 06:44 AM Cool, I'll give these suggestions a try tomorrow. Any ideas about the "juddering?" I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be related to Edge enhancing or sharpness.
TKubik 09-12-2009, 06:57 PM The sharpness and edge enhancement didn't change anything, the only thing that gets rid of the pixelation is to turn off the 120htz TruMotion, which kind of defeats the purpose of have a 120htz tv right?
Is it possible that there are competing signals coming from the blu ray player and the tv?

Not all LCD's suffer from having lots of grain in the picture do to having a 120-240Hz TV.

Do you have your BD player set to output 24P (24 FPS)?
The idea of a 120 Hz display is to show 24P as a multiple of 5 which avoids the 3:2 pulldown which is the cause of frame judder.
And you saw no change in the image at all when you set the Sharpness to as opposed to 50? You should have seen the image soften up.

I haven't messed around with the 24P feature on my Oppo BDP-83 yet, is it the preferred method for BD playback?
TKubik 09-13-2009, 04:32 AM I have the blu ray set to 24p. I tried it on 60 too, just for shiggles but that didn't change anything. The picture softened significantly when I reduced the sharpness, but the "pixel cloud" around subjects did not change. My friend brought a bunch of blu rays over today and his high quality HDMI cable, we swapped everything out and still got the pixel cloud on every one of the blu rays we tried.
As far as the juddering, I get that even when I'm on the satellite channels, not just blu ray.
TKubik 09-13-2009, 04:33 AM I think it's time to call a technician out. I mean, it's covered for a year anyways right? I might as well have him tell me what's wrong with it if it's going to be free.

HDMI cables are HDMI cables. Either they work or they don't. There is no better quality. More expensive and a monster rip off but no better than a $5 one, FYI.
I forget. Can you still return the display to the store? If so that would be the best choice IMO. I would also recommend trying a different brand than LG which is really just Goldstar (3rd/4th tier old brand) that changed their name so they could charge premium pricing.

No wonder he's having problems, LG/Goldstar is trash! Sorry that's just my opinion.
rubystone1111 09-13-2009, 05:50 PM when I got my philips HDTV.. it had a clouding problem. I took it back and got another one.. no problem with the new set. it could be a problem like that.

Actually LG bought Zenith so you were partially right, just the opposite direction. :D
LG=Lucky Goldstar. But they prefer to say it means "Life is Good".
