No sound via hdmi and wrong native resolution detected

Hi all

I am new to this forum and hope someone can help.

I just bought an Intel pc to replace an AMD pc (that died) which I have been using successfully with my 26 inch Samsung HDTV (LCD) for a couple of years - gaming, video and music

So, the new pc (Gigabyte GA-EP43_UD3L mb; E7600 CPU, 3.06 Ghz, FSB 1066MHz, 3mb L2 cache Socket LGA 775) has an HDMI connection to the video card (NVIDIA 9600 GT) so have connected via that but am getting no sound. Have checked and do have the RealTek HD audio drivers installed and all looks fine there...

Anyone know why that might be?

Also, NVIDIA detects the HDTV native resolution wrong - according to the Samsung manual it should be 1360 x 736 but the program thinks it should be 1280 x 720 which makes half of the desk top invisible. If I try to enter it as a custom size (which the NVIDIA driver program has on the menu) it says that size is not supported. Not sure if thats an issue for the health of my HDTV - ppl say that they can be damaged if not run at native resolution?

THis is not the main issue really because the program includes a re-size function which is handy but that also reduces the resolution. The worst part is that, at what the pc thinks is the optimal setting, web pages etc look awful - text is multi coloured and hard to read and hurts your eyes. Have played a game (Stalker) and it is difficult to see contrasts etc even tho its running at maximum.

Can anyone help with either of these issues? I am not sure if I should make the NVIDIA driver program use NVIDIA settings instead of my HDTV display settings (which is the default) and have no clue what to do about the sound!

Just looked up your video card and I'm pretty sure from the specs that an audio chip is not included on the card. You need to run a separate audio cable to either the TV or a receiver. If you are using a receiver you can run a SPDIF cable, which tends to be the Optical Digital cables for most computer digital audio. If you are running to the TV and it has an input for the old school PC audio cable you can use that.

I'm not sure about your other problem.

Hi there .

I have the same video card but a different tv(philips hdtv). The audio solution that suggested "Shark2k" works for me just fine. See also the following thread where inter alia the "Admin" suggested the same solution. (Thread Ref:Pc to tv (no digital audio)

Currently my pc is hooked up to the tv with the hdmi cable, yet I'm using a separate standard cable for the sound (i.e.analog) that is connected from the realtek card to the HDTV.

As I can recall the nvdia control panel is quite useful for the screen resolution. But before getting to that, please be sure that you have performed all the steps required by the user's manual of your HDTV for connecting the PC.(My tv user manual for example had the proper configuration for both the TV and the PC for said connection, and also stated the highest resolution that the pc could perform with the tv screen).

I remember that i have changed the Hz in the computer settings as required by the TV user’s manual / changed TV Screen resolution from the nvdia control panel to 720p (works better for me than 1080p) / and I have disabled the screen escalation (4:3,16:9 etc) from the menu tv as required by the tv user's manual/changed the audio option for hdmi as per tv user's manual.

Also you must be careful while selecting whether the HDTV screen is the "clone" monitor or the No1 or No.2 monitor, during the initial installation of the video card. Some issues may arise from that end too. But i think all the info required is included in the booklet that came with the video card.

Hope that any of the above hepls
