I would like to have some of the extra features like netflix but it isn't necessary

More than anything i just want to get one that functions well playing blue ray and dvd.

I have to recommend my Panasonic BD60. Performs well for both DVDs and BluRays, has up-to-date firmware support, and features VieraCast (allows you to access YouTube, Weather, Picasa, and Amazon through your player).

Can't complain about it so far. Owned it for around a month.

I'd go with the LG BD390. It has Netflix streaming and WiFi capability.

What will be used to handle audio? If you have a surround system, do you have HDMI audio processing? If you will have to use the old analog 5.1 method of connection and want to take advantage of the advanced audio formats, you will need a player that has analog 5.1 output.

sound system will come later

i like both of those. I really like the lg i wish it was a little cheaper. I think bd370 is just as good for what i am going to use it for, its about $215

i've also considered just getting a PS3

If you don't need WiFi then the 370 is the way to go. If you do need it then go with the 390 I mention above.

I agree. The PS3 is the way to go. It is one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market, as well as being one of the best gaming systems around. As a friend of mine used to say - " You get BOTH for 1 money ". The recent $100 price drop doesn't hurt, either. :2cents

Get a PS3 slim and don't look back...

Assuming the PS3 slim is a good choice for whatever system it will be used with, I would say the PS3 is the best $300 player.

I just got a PS3 Slim a couple of weeks ago and I have to say it's awesome. I've been using a Samsung 2550 bluray player, and the Slim is just as good (maybe better) but I doubt my layman's eye can tell the difference between the two. Game play is also better than I expected and my 6 yr old is addicted.

Slim gets my vote!
