I have a bet going on this one...

Depends on which system/equipment I am using so my answer would be both yes and no.

Yes, whenever possible (having enough HDMI inputs)

Yes, I run HDMI for audio and video for every device I have connected to my home theater. I transitioned from component to HDMI for my main setup when I bought my LCD, receiver, and speakers last year .

I use HDMI for audio with DVD-V/CD/SACD/DVD-A/Blu-ray/HD DVD/TiVo.

Have you tried multichannel analog audio with your Oppo BDP-83 yet? If not, do so, you may be pleasantly surprised...

So, what's the bet?

It's seems most would run audio over hdmi instead of any extra cables such as optical. I have a universal multichannel player that doesn't give me the option of using hdmi so I use 5.1 analog.

Yes, I even have an extra hdmi switcher cause theres not enough inputs in my receiver.

Yes, I run HDMI for audio!

No

Audio only needs to go the the 5.1 stereo receiver.

Video only needs to go to the TV.

TV speakers are disconnected and rewired to the center channel.

Pulled all my hair out programming a Sony programmable remote to switch everything. So now I look kind of like Howie Mandel.

Yes, I'm running audio from a Blu-ray player and a WD HDTV media player via HDMI.

Yes, Audio and Video for every capable device.

But you haven't said who won the bet???

My AV receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs, so I run HDMI directly to my flat panel. Whether you use HDMI to pass bitstream to the AV receiver or from the BD players analog multichannel outputs to the receiver depends on which device does a better job of DA conversion. My Oppo Digital BDP-83 is at or above the capability of my Denon receiver which is my weakest link in the chain of AV gear.

The question should be "Why would anyone NOT want to run audio via HDMI?"

Generally, with all the hi-def discs, you will only get a lossy codec out for M/C via Toslink or SPDIF.

So yes I do run all available audio via HDMI.

The answer is which DA converters are of higher quality, your AV pre-amp processer or your Blu-ray players built-in DAC. It all comes down to DAC's, the new Denon $4500 dollar BD player has some of the best DA converters around!

You then miss out on your receiver handling bass management, room EQ and level matching your speakers.

IMHO save $$$ on the fancy BR player and put the money saved into a better receiver ;-)

Actually multichannel analog audio is just as good and in some cases better than HDMI audio if your equipment can connect that way.

Quite correct. That's why my DVD-A/SACD player is hooked up that way ;-) BTW there are only just so many 6/7/8 ch annalog inputs in the back of these receivers and that's why HDMI is such a good idea.

BTW do you realise that audio only BR discs are now being released in hi-def 24/96 audio to replace DVD-A and possibly SACD?

I don't know about replacing those two formats but yes I am aware of it. The pricing will determine whether it flies or not...

Where are these HD 24bit/96KHz audio only BR discs? Are you referring to Blu-ray profile 3.0?

And what are you using the HDMI for? Cable, Satellite, PS3, etc? Are you running the HDMI through a receiver?

The cable guy had me try different steps in settings, etc. didn't work. thought maybe it was the cable box or defective HDMI connector

You need to do all of the usual troubleshooting steps to isolate the problem.

Try a different cable.

Try a different input on the TV.

Check the settings on the cable box and on the TV.

Try another device with an HDMI output such as a DVD player - do you get audio from it?

well, I think I will wait for the cable guy tomorrow. I've wasted so much time and did what you suggested. One of my concerns is that I hope I do NOT need an extra connection for the audio to work. I read something about that in the
Scientific Atlanta manual. The Toshiba manual is not very clear about HDMI and connections.
