I have tons of old DVD's already, should I really upgrade to a Blu-Ray player?
I mean I have not send a Upconverting HDMI DVD in action yet does anyone have experience with one?
Loves2Watch 09-01-2009, 02:00 PM The Toshiba XDE models are excellent upconverting DVD players but you can buy a Blu-ray player for close to the same price these days.
If you have a HDTV, I would suggest looking at some of the low cost Blu-ray players since they play SD DVD's as well with generally good upscaling capabilities. The prices for Blu-ray movies is steadily coming down so you will be ready when the price point is where you would like.
Hope this helps.

Wow you guys are pretty quick around here, Thanks :)
I seen a upconverting player for $60 bucks & since I spent nearly $670 on my new HDTV, makes sense for me to get it but others in my house house scream stop being behind the times and get Blu-Ray.

If you're in the habit of satisfying the whole household (I know the feeling) ,then search around for a Blu-Ray that meets the overall criteria. The Panasonic BD 60 is around $200 and should work just fine. Go online and read, read, read the reviews. Since the family's chooses to put in their 2 cents, they should help pay for it as well...:D
HD Goofnut 09-01-2009, 02:42 PM A decent upconverting player will run you $60-70 easily. You can get an off brand Blu-ray player for $100 more or a name brand for $150 more.
Loves2Watch 09-01-2009, 03:58 PM Something like this would work just fine - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10825995
For $129 it's a bargain for a Blu-ray player.
iserum 09-02-2009, 02:22 PM there is no point getting an upconverting player, BD is the way to go. most $200 BD player do very good upscaling.
Thanks guys I will check out that one at Walmart this weekend.
kratos 09-04-2009, 11:11 PM Just get a PS3 for $299. It will up-convert your dvd's, play blu-rays, and you can game on it!
chinee 09-09-2009, 10:39 PM An upconvert player will still provide a stunning picture with your HDTV. I've had a Samsung DVD 1080P9 upconvert player on my 40" Samsung since June and I've been very pleased. I also have a Samsung 2550 bluray player and at 14-15 feet on a 52" screen, I can hardly tell the difference between BD and Upconverted DVD. However... I just got a PS3 Slim, connected it to the 40" Sammy and there is substantial improvement over Upconverted DVD quality. 1080p makes a big difference, and I think it's also because I sit as close as 6 feet from the screen; the lower resolution of the DVD, or increased resolution of BD, is more apparent..
If you can, get the BD player. Netflix streaming is pretty cool too.

As long as it works well in the given system, I sure can't think of a better $300 media player. It won't work in every system, you can't stack other components on it and it needs to be in the open and well ventilated in my opinion, although I have read that others have their PS3 in a cabinet without issue apparently. I would be afraid it generates too much heat, there is a lot of processing power in that little box.

Yeah, if you put the PS3, at least the older version, into a closed off cabinet it becomes an oven in a few minutes.

DoctorCAD 09-10-2009, 10:13 AM Come on, Lee...
A weak attempt.
No specifics given and uses an outdated format.
Not a good comparison.

I disagree. It is a very good comparison and is also a well known comparison among the HD media warriors. How is a HD format that many say is equal (but some say is inferior) to BD not a good comparison to use? BD can look every bit as good as this HD DVD sample, so I believe this is valid myself. ;)
dsskid 09-10-2009, 12:01 PM I agree. I think it's a very good example showing the difference in the picture quality between upconverting DVDs and HD.
Thanks Lee.
