Hello everyone,
New poster to the forum. So I have been running my HD from the set top box to the TV with component cables. No speakers involved. I decided to get an HDMI cable so that it would be a much cleaner look with only one wire instead of 5. Well, I hooked up the cable from my Scientific American Explorer 8300HDC to my Sony Bravia 32" LCD. The picture was bouncing and there was no audio. There was no bounce with the component cables and obviously the audio worked fine.
Just wondering if any settings need to be changed so that the audio will come thru the HDMI, or if there is anything I can do to get rid of the bounce? Definitely wasnt as easy of a change as I had hoped when I bought this HDMI cable. I will take any advice. Thanks all.

I have similar problem. with coaxial connector picture and audio was fine. Now upgraded to high def set top cable box with one connector (hdmi). now no audio at all. just a perfect picture. help.

Cable boxes are notorious for having problems with the HDMI HDCP handshake. I recommend as I do to all who use a cable box or satellite box, to use component (red, blue, green cables) for video and optical/coaxial digital or analog (red, white wires) for audio. You will get the same high quality audio and video without any hassles.

Hi, I was having the same problem.
It was frustrating.
If the HDMI cable is plugged in and I choose any other input ie component video, I get audio but no video. When I unplug the HDMI cable and component video is selected the video returns. weird.
Figured it was a non audio HDMI cable the dude at the TW office gave me.
But... I just kept trying.
My Toshiba Regza has a PC/HDMI audio input.
If I connected an audio cable from the cable box to this input I got great sound with the HDMI cable plugged into HDMI 1.
This is a weird cable. 2 RCA plugs that plug into the cable box audio out and 1 headphone plug that plugs into the TV. (RadioShack)
I also had to go into the Audio Setup for the TV. Made sure PC Audio was not selected. Made sure HDMI Audio was set to Analog
I am going to try optical audio next.

With the Scientific American Explorer 8300HD box you have to make sure the audio digital out is set to HDMI using the Settings button on the remote. Otherwise there will not be any sound on your HDMI connection.

That doesn't resolve the strange video which is due to the HDMI HDCP handshake as I stated before. Most cable companies don't even giive customer support for HDMI due to this even though it would be quite simple for them to do a firmware update to their cable boxes...

I presume you set up the compatible HD formats with the TV on and the box off using (I think) the Guide/Info buttons first? Sorry I'd have to rummage around for my instruction book to verify the buttons.
