u need an outdoor/indoor antenna for you locals channels (connect to antenna input in your 811 receiver and search for the digital channels through you HDTV set up in the receiver) , my local HD channels drops all the time this why i got rid of dishnetwork, since theu do not offer local HD, all new good programs and sports are on local HD channles now i have cable and all locals are include in digital tier package.

No final word on the availability of local HDs through Dish at this point. They are due before the year's out, is the latest I heard.
Most of us our going with OTA in the meantime.

The only network channel in HD that dishnetwork provides is CBS-HD which you may be able to get if you qualify. The Voom channels are satellite only and you require a dish for 61.5 location (which is also needed for CBS-HD east). The rest of the satellite HD are on the 110 slot (see HDPak). To get all your free local channels you need a TV antenna (outdoor preferred) and this will aloow you to get all your analog and digital (HD included) stations. In the future dishnetwork will provide HD locals but presently they only have the analog channels available.

I have Dishnetwork locals, (Just signed up for Dish) I am a recent convert.
I signed a 1 year contract with Dish Network, but since I can get locals with an off air antenna, am I locked into the "LOcals on dish" costs?

I think you can get out of the locals but not the basic package that you first chose.

You are right, I called them, they said they will give me a one time charge of $5.00 to disconnect the locals, when I buy an off-air antenna.
Thanks for your help.

I have a question.
To get HD Locals OTA, do I need a special HD antanna or will any antanna work?
I have an outdoor antana that is sitting on my roof for years and was thinking about connecting it to my 811 reciever. Will this work? will I get HD locals?
Thanks in advance.

There is no such thing as a "special HD antenna".
I have an antenna on my roof that was there when I bought the house. The thing was so old it didn't even have a coax connection on it, just the flat 75 ohm wire. I spliced a coax in, connected it to my 811, and now get CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, WB, UPN and PBS in OTA HD.
In theory it should work, but it all depends on how close the broadcast towers are from your location, the line of sight, etc. The antenna is just one factor.

There's no 'special HD antenna", but there may be a proper HD antenna.
Most digital/HD stations broadcast on the UHF band. Check antennaweb.org for your local broadcast channels. If none are VHF, you may be better off with a UHF antenna.

92% of the digital stations presently in operation in the US are in the UHF band. You'll need to learn the analog and digital channel numbers for your area. Although UHF may apply to most if the digital channel is between 52 - 69 it will have to give up that frequency after 2006. Example: If channel 10 (analog) has its digital feed on chan 58 it will revert back to 10 in the future. Keep this in mind when selecting a UHF only antenna.

Thanks all. I hook up my old attana to the 811 and worked! I now have two more HD channels, KCET-HD and KOCE-HD. My other locals are in Digital and I'm able to watch HD programs in HD.
If I only knew this sooner I could have watch ABC NBA playoff in HD.

I get all my OTA in HD with the crappy old antenna on the roof. Now if only UPN would broadcast in HD...not that they have ANYTHING I watch anyway.

If you're receiving that $20 special deal then the locals are really being tossed in for free. If you got superdish for free by subscribing to locals then you'll have to keep them until the term is up because the penalty cost allot more than the $60-72 annual savings. Basically if you're planning on cancelling then check with dishnetwork as to the savings versus cost would be before actually doing anything.

So If I have digital through my DirectTV package, with the standard (not HD) reciever, will I not even get the HD programs that say "Shown in Hi-Def where available" (I thought we were getting them in HD i.e. CSI, Judging Amy, Law and Order, etc on prime time network channels).
Our JVC HD-ILA 52G886 has a built in tuner (ATSC) - what good is this feature if not for recieving Hi-Def broadcasts? And how do I get them? Do I need to hook up an antenna on top of my house? Someone told me the cable from the dish should be in the ATSC jack, and the antenna in the VHF/UHF jack, but the DirectTV guy put the Dish cable into the reciever first, then into the TV's VHF/UHF jack. I keep reading people saying they get all the local channels from their antenna - But I already get them with our Direct TV package - or is it the HD that you get from an antenna hooked to the ATSC jack (or to the VHG/UHF jack)? Yes, I AM blonde, and I could use your help. Thanks - Kate55

The message says "in HD WERE AVAILABLE" and if you dont have a HD receiver, then you won't recieve HD programming from Dish Network, but if you have an off-air antenna plugged into the back of your TV, then you will get TOSE channels ONLY in HD.

Your rear projection TV has a digital TV tuner so connecting that to a TV antenna will get both analog and digital (which includes HD) stations.
If the message says "HD where available" that's coming from the national network feed. You'll need to know if your local station is providing that program in HD or not. For example my local CBS digital station is unable to provide HD programming but hopes to by 2006. Also realize that 480p can be in wide screen format and many people mistake it for HD when it's really SD.

HD signals can't be sent over that RF over Coax connection from the STB... they require HDMI, DVI, or Component connection. For your SDTV setup, you will get better quality using SVideo + stereo audio cables, or composite video if you must.
With your antenna connected to the ATSC tuner you will receive the local digital broadcasts, which are often HD. The input labeled 'UHF/VHF' is for analog NTSC... you'll want to chain the signal, or split the input cable, so you can receive both analog & digital.

Actually there is a way the send HD over coax. The model 5000 receiver had an optional port for an accessory called a HD modulator. It converted the HD info from the satellite into 8VSB and modulated as channel 3. You then send to a HDTV (with digital tuner) antenna's input.
None of the present dish receivers do that but if they wanted to, they could make a reveiver simular to the 942 but it's TV2 output could have ATSC instead of just NTSC modulation. In the future people will have multiple HD sets around the house and this could be an easy solution.

I know sending ATSC via analog is possible with an 8-VSB modulator, but didn't know it had ever been used... in the early days when tuners were scarce, it was an output without available inputs. In the earliest days of ATSC, a couple cablecos carried it in analog retransmission just like the other broadcast channels - but only a handful could receive it. Perhaps this will change now that most sets have tuners...
