Just a simple DVR

It's just the wife and I so my needs are not complicated.

I need advice on a <$100 DVR . I am just looking for a box I can put upstream of the cable box and record one show while someone is watching another.

We just have one TV in the house.

To get one from Comcast , We have to upgrade our TV package then purchase or rent the unit from them and I also think we have to pay a fee just to use it.:banghead:

I also am without a Windows tower in the house, We both have Mac so adding a Tuner is not an option.

Do you need to be able to record digital cable? Or would just recording whatever analog channels you get do for you?

If you need to be able to record digital cable I think you're out of luck. You couldn't get what you wanted from any service provider, FiOS, U-Verse, RCN, Charter, Cox, Cablevision, TWC, Dish Network or DirecTV, not for that price.

If analog can work for you, check eBay for some older DVRs. Most TiVo Series 1s, for example, will record analog without a subscription.

If you're with Comcast and you have digital cable, you're really going to want (and eventually need) a digital DVR. Otherwise, you'll be stuck trying to chain an analog DVR to a cable box, with IR emitters and other such silliness. I find that kind of thing infuriating because the interference from a passing truck can mess up a channel change.

Currently, there are only two digital cable DVRs available in production for sale to the general public in the United States: The TiVo HD and the Moxi HD DVR. Unfortunately, both boxes, with lifetime service pre-paid, run well over your budget (by a factor of seven or eight).

I have a DVR that only works on analog cable that I can no longer use, as I got Direct TV last month.

I watch so little TV I just don't care enough at this time to put more money out.
